Hi Dan,

I certainly don't make an exorbitant amount of money -- and so I shop at the 
military commissary to save money. Well, their baggers work 'only' for tips, 
and I suspect they make pretty good money.  I hate going to the commissary 
for only that reason -- that these folks work for tips.  When I'm checking 
out, I always step to the side and begin bagging my own groceries and when 
someone comes up to take over, I refuse and tell them I can do it.  Well, 
about a year ago, a woman just forced herself in front of me, and so I told 
her that I couldn't afford her tip and that I was quite capable of bagging & 
carrying my own groceries -- and I said this pretty loud so that the cashier 
would hear me.

Well, she finished and carried my stuff out to the car, and I told her that 
I wasn't comfortable with that and reminded her that I wasn't going to tip. 
After she put everything in the car, she held out her hand as though 
expecting a tip.  I told her 'no', I appreciate the kind gesture, but that 
she wasn't going to get a tip.  I'm a single parent, full time student, 
living on enlisted pay for god sake, it's amazing I'm not in debt.

She began to curse at me as though I was some crazy cheat of a man and gave 
me some BS story about having 5 kids and a dead husband. So, I followed her 
back into the store, and talked to the manager who told me that story wasn't 
true.  I reported her actives, and then I saw her doing it to someone else!! 
I was floored.  I confronted her in front of the cashier and other 
customers.  She cried from embarrassment, and went to the back of the store, 
and I left.  So, long story short, I followed up with the report and had her 
fired.  What she did, imho, was attempt to use lies and guilt as a form of 
extortion.  It was determined by the board of inquiry that decided that she 
should be fired that she was 'less than honorable'.  There are some really 
nice people who shop there and I'm sure that some people just did 'without' 
in order to put more money in her pocket, but I think people her that just 
don't need to be working in a place where (mostly) low income people shop.

I may be mistaken, but I think the military commissary is the only place I'm 
aware of on U.S. soil that allows works to work for tips only - i.e. no 
hourly wage.
