PL>> (without any protection at all) to the highest crotch (around 60ft.)
PL>> to get a skinner line set so I could take out the lower limbs without
PL>> going for a bounce myself.

JY> You gotr more guts than I have, and a lot of
 JY> self-confidence, for sure.

I have to admit, that one wasn't fun at all. Very rarely would I be more than
20' of the ground without a buckstrap in place, and then the next stop is up
top to place a skinner line for double protection. This one was foot by foot
with nothing but spikes, having to check the bark above me to make sure it was
intact enough to spike, and alot wasn't. Once I was up top and tied in I did
take a few moments to let the knees stop shaking. As to the guts and self
confidence, I'm just stubborn. I was there, and it needed to be done, so I did
it. Next time I have one like that though, I think I'll pay somebody else to
climb it... there are several climbers in my area not tied in with any
particular tree service, and I'm getting a little too old for that type of
climbing. Recently an owner of another company took himself out (all the way
out) doing stuff better
left for a younger guy... I think I'd rather pay a climber in the future on a
tree like that than end up one of the yearly statistics in this area.

JY> White oak is a fairly scarce commodity down here compared
JY> to the availability of the pines. The one that I have
JY> staked out has about 35' to the first limb, it's ~24" in
 JY> diameter

Don't see many White Oaks around here anymore either. Why those people at the
funeral home wanted to take it down is beyond me... it was a healthy tree, and
wasn;t in danger of falling on anything. Was far back from the building in the
middle of a lawn to the side of a parking lot. My best guess is that they
would rather take it down than pay for the fall cleanups every year.

 PL>> if the cut was
PL>> all the way through it wouldn't peel over the pie cut the same. It
PL>> would basicly snap and give way all at once, and it would come across
PL>> the pie too fast and the momentum would take it whichever way it
PL>> wanted to go. Letting it come down slower gives it that exact
PL>> twisting effect you describe above.

JY> I always left a "hinge" or solid part between the
 JY> undercut and the back-cut to direct the fall of the tree;
JY> usually the hinge would be rectangular, but there have
JY> been occasions when I made the tree twistas it fell to
JY> clear power lines etc with the limbs. Don't get the idea
JY> that I ever did this stuff for a living, just as needed
 JY> and for friends.

Different sittuations call for different base cuts. Sometimes I leave a hinge,
sometimes I do as I described on the other, and other times I just pie and let
it fly. Most times there will be three guys on a rope pulling as I make my
back cut, some get tied to the truck and pulled over... in tight spots where a
truck couldn;t do a straight pull, I
will attach a pulley to another tree and have the pull rope through it and
attached to the truck.

Anything with even a remote chance of effecting power lines I will top out
before dropping. All depends.

JY> Gee! No firewood business? there's a big profit in
JY> firewood and yu can work it up at your convenience during
JY> the year to sell in the winter. Thisis a cheap part of
JY> hte world and oak-hickory firewood is bringing $150/cord.
JY> People go crazy about it at this time of year for that
JY> festive look in the fireplace.

To be honest, I don't have the land to work on firewood. At one time I had
somebody who wanted to do it with me, on their land, and the more I thought
about it the more I felt that there was just far too much work involved for too
little return.

I do give some wood away... I bring several loads a year to this woman in
Mariaville who gives my partner and I exclusive hunting rights on her land
(Monday is opening day here BTW :) , and a few of my regular chimney customers
get a few loads... nickels and dimes really. I don't split it for them or
anything, I just cut it at 18" lengths and drop it there. I do it more as a
favor than with the idea of making anything off of it. If I ever buy a piece
of land, and can afford a reasonably priced firewood processor and to pay
somebody to work it, I might consider it, but a commercial grade firewood
processor is up there in the beans (I know somebody who bought one -used- for
22,000 bux). Could be got on payments, however, already have payments on the
Brush Bandit to make... that chipper is no cheap item either. To do it simply
with a splitter is for the birds IMO. The only way it would be worth it to me
is if I had the right setup, and I found somebody who was willing to work it
for 50% of the profits, (me providing the setup and the wood, they providing
the labor and delivering), otherwise it would just be a hassle to me, taking up
what little free time I do have.

Phil
