The simpler the better, I would think. They're both of a faith that uses
the old testiment dietary rules.

Wikipedia says this about 'kosher';

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

The clean animals are listed in the book of Leviticus in the Torah. Many
animals in the passage that are clean have the characteristic of having
divided hoofs and also chew their cud for it to be regurgitated. In the
case in fish, scales and fins are present. If they do not have either one
of them, they can be considered as an unclean animal. The division is
largely used as the basis for identifying taboo meat proscribed by
religious dietary laws, which in Judaism are known as kashrut and in Islam
as halaal.

Yeup, horse hooves.

Look, I use their same diet guidlines in what I eat. I don't eat much
meat, but if and when I do, it's gotta be kosher. That pisses Nancy off,
because she likes pork chops every once in a while. Some people are so
restrictive in their kosher diet, they won't eat kosher food that has even
been touched by hands that have handled unclean meat. I won't either if I
know about it.

CS> You can get 'kosher/halal' beef here. Pricey but out in town, yes,

All kosher means is that it hasn't been tainted by unclean foods. The
touch thing I mention above. And squid is definately out. What gets me is
that here in Texas, they wrap a piece of sow belly around a Filet Mignon
and cook it. How to ruin a good piece of meat in my cook book.

I'll bet you could get away with a good dish of spaghetti as long as you
don't use marinara or meat sauce. Just remember, if your cooking utinsels
aren't kosher (cutting implements and machines), then your food isn't
kosher either. If it is to be considered kosher food, it must be prepared
with kosher equipment.

Sounds like you do the best you can, under the circumstances. When I first
started eating like this, some 35 years ago, it was tough to conform to
it, but over the years, it becomes second nature to be picky in what you
eat.
