From watching a Nova special about that WTC engineering assessment, I 
recall it concluded, not so much that the steel lost its structural 
integrity during the fire but, that the connecting system of the floor 
joists to the outer shell was inadequate. The girder system was being 
held by a single bolt and this is the part that failed prematurely. In 
other words and in hindsight had the girder been riveted or soldered 
in place the WTC might still be standing today.
