Ärende: Recent History of Europe

Though I'm certain none of you will actually read it, thus 
avoiding learning more of the truth, there's a fascinating history 
of Europe (Tony Judt, "Postwar:  A History of Europe Since 1945", 
Penguin).  After all, Mr. Judt likely wasn't "there" during WWII 
and, of course, he's probably "senile" ... heh heh heh ...

Since you won't be reading it, let me tell you some of what it 
contains:  Judt points out that in every occupied country except 
Denmark, local officials lent a hand in the deportation, and 
eventual extermination of millions of Jews ... Europe was not 
murdered by intruders.  It committed suicide ... Much of 
Europe's military, political and cultured elite had fled, 
collaborated, or been killed ... 

The economy of Western Europe was restored because U.S. Secretary 
of State George Marshall proposed a plan of unprecedented 
financial assistance, and the plan was intelligently 
implemented ... 

Europe was able to rebuild itself politically and 
economically only by forgetting the past ... the 
forgetting was necessary not just because the behavior of 
most Europeans under Fascism and Nazi occupation was less 
admirable than anyone wished to acknowledge -- but that 
was naturally a big part of it ... the bewildering 
collapse of the great French Army which folded within 
six weeks ... the alacrity with which many countries adapted 
to occupation ... the willingness to ignore and sometimes to 
assist in, the deportations, all made distasteful memories.

The forty-million French nation was controlled by a mere fifteen 
hundred Nazis and six thousand German police.  The Netherlands, 
too, were controlled by a skeleton force.  After the war had 
ended a Myth of Resistance sprang up ... for many years it 
obscured the truth about wartime life ...

But why go on?  None of you will believe this anyway.  The 
European mind is blocked from both the memories of their largely 
disgraceful activities during WWII as well as the fact that it 
was America which raised them from the near-dead.

*Now* do the non-Europeans among you understand why modern 
Europeans would rather, "Forget about WWII ... let's move 
on!"??? ... heh heh heh ...

This, then, also helps explain why modern Europe will not 
stand up and help us fight the terrorists in Iraq -- England, 
Italy and Poland excepted, of course.  Why should Europeans feel 
any responsibility -- "Let America do the hard work!"

... Don't ever pick a fight with somebody who's really ugly-lookin'.
