Hello Matt,

 > MvdV> Well, let's say we have seen an interesting demonstration of

 > My only concern is that a moderator should not be beyond

 > done;

I see your point, but it may be a moot point. Widespread use of the InterNet
for the transport of FidoNet mail has brought the cost down to almost zero, but
the backside of that medal is that it is very difficult if not impossible to
get a feed cut for a determined and experienced user.

 > however, I guess it would be pointless in this zone
 > since feed cuts are subject to the agreement of he who
 > moves the traffic and what some entry on some sysop's
 > echolist has on it;

So someone who is cut off just moves to another link that does not recognise
the e-list as final authority.

 > again, at least that is how things are run are here.

I am starting to have my doubts. I keep hearing that the backbone systems will
not carry echo that are not in the list and that they will use the list as the
ultimate authority as to who is moderator, but no one will tell me who these
backbone systems are. Where is the list of systems that actually operate in
such a rigid way?

 > Here, they claim that EP1 is not recognized and is not a

Exactly.

 > and require to give legitimacy to their illegitimate claims to

It is very simple. The legitimacy ultimately depends on the power to enforce
the rules you have set. Where do you think this three mile rule comes from.
Very simple: that is how far the big cannons could shoot at that time. So a
three mile zone could be enforced.

 > Do you actually believe people would collect gold if it
 > held no value in the eyes of others?

Actually I have always wondered about that. Gold has little value as an
industrial material. It is used in some apllications, such as electrical
contacts, but it is far from indispensible in industry.

People go through a lot of effort to get the gold out of the ground. And what
do they do with it? They put it back into the ground again in Fort Knox. It
serves no purpose, it just sits there. If a magician were to turn all the gold
in Fort Knox into iron tonight nothing would happen. Until of cou5se, someone
would find out about it. /Then/ and only /then would all hell braak loose...

 > It is about as sane as the seatbelt law in my state. (tangent)
 > You will get a $130 ticket if you are not wearing your seatbelt.

Same here. I don't know the exact amount, but is probalbly un the same order of
magnitude.

 > They claim it is for your safety but people are allowed to ride
 > motorcycles without helmets and in the back of pickup
 > trucks w/o retraint.

Not here. Helmets are compulsory and passengers are not allowed in the freight
compartment of trucks.

But.... there are no seat belts in the busses. One does not even have to be
seated.

 > Aren't the lives of those people just as important to deserve
 > a fine? :-) (/tangent)

Yes, it is weird isn't it?

 > Things would work so much more simpler if people could
 > simply extend courtesy and use the tools that were
 > available from the start rather than invent rules as they go.

Problem is that what the one considers courteous, the other considers an
infrigment. Courtesy is based on moral values and moral values aren't universal
across cultures.

 > would similar behavior by a Z2 sysop be permitted by a Z1 mail
 > mover in Mr. Ceppa's echo? I wonder?

I can't answer that. Dan said that he would not tolerate the way he behaved
himself in his own echo though.

 > Shame to all those who feel they are beyond reproach and down
 > with their double standards. I say take the value away from

 > ignore their messages then fido will have no value to them
 > and they will leave.

Having people leave is not really what we want is ot? Our numbers are
dangerously low as it is.

Cheers, Michiel
