RW>> One of my favorite actors has been Robert Duvall from his early
 RW>> work when
RW>> he had hair. As he's matured, he's gotten to be one of the best
 RW>> actors in
 RW>> pictures.

 PL> Agreed.

PL> He also had a very good earlier role in "The Eagle has Landed".

PL> Although using a fake german accent, he played his role well.

PL> Another movie I remember him from other than the ones he's well known
PL> for was the one where he was an oil engineer (or kook case).. what
PL> was the name of that movie? I've been wanting to buy it. I saw it
PL> ONCE, but the role he played still sits in the foggy parts of my
PL> brain, and I kinda NEED to see it again.

He did a sequel to Apocolypse Now with The Great Santini...but before that
he did an excellent protrayal of Ned Pepper in True Grit. A great role for
him, but alas, not much hair.

The dialogue in True Grit is an absolute delight. Crack open anything by
Mark Twain, Henry James or any other late 19th century author, and you
will see that people really did speak differently 150 years ago.

RW>> As for Martin Sheen, he played the perfect part for him in The
RW>> Execution of Private Slovik (1974), in the movie where they ended up
RW>> shooting him for disertion in the line of fire (WW2).

PL> I am not familiar with that one, but it gives me something to find,
 PL> and see.

PL> To get into Martin Sheen would require a thread in itself... he has
PL> done MANY motion pictures, some good, some questionable. He has
PL> always taken the "serious actor" aproach in all his endevours that I
PL> know of, and as he has matured he has done nothing but get better and
PL> better. I consider him a fine actor, and at the level he is, I feel
PL> he could play any role he put his mind to, and deliver top rated
PL> performance. He was never a slouch.

Sorry, I cannot agree on that one.

RW>> I suspect that coward is his real nature as he's been kicked in the
RW>> head too many times by the police when they've had to remove him
RW>> from the gates of San Onofre.

PL> I could't give a shit about actors personal lives.

I usually don't either, except when they use their fame as a pulpit to
push their political views. Sheen isn't the worst of them, but he's right
up there.

PL> I only care about their on screen perforances, as that is what I pay
 PL> to see.

There is far more to life than watching movies and people playing a part
that screams of fairy tales.

RW>> Of course, that has also affected his offspring, as can be witnessed
RW>> by the 'frightening' look in the eyes of Emillo Estavez...and the
RW>> stupid acting of Charlie Sheen.

PL> IMO Emilio is better than Charlie WRT to acting, but neither of the
PL> sons are as good as Martin is. I still find his Gen. Lee (Martin)
PL> perfomance to be an outstanding piece of workmanship.

PL> I did like Charlie in Platoon though... but that is the ONLY role I
PL> ever likes him in. It also did very much remind me of his father not
PL> only in the time setting and war it involved, but looking back at it
PL> the younger Martin Sheen, and his son, bear a very striking image of
 PL> each other. (In Apocolypse).

And that's fine, as long as their resemblance stays in play acting. Once
they cross the line into politics, they're doomed to abandonment here.

PL> Charlie lost it for me when he got involved in the parody movies he
PL> got involved with. (That "stupid" acting you spoke of). That's
PL> usually a sign of the quick buck vs. serious actor sellout.

Not unlike Lesley Neilson (sp), who was out of place as a serious actor,
and had more fun while making parody movies. He got more respect from me
in those roles than the former.

RW>> And what pisses me off is that he's two days older than I
RW>> am. He doesn't deserve to be a Leo, he isn't one by nature.

PL> HAH-HAH! There's that personal life stuff on the acotrs again ;>
PL> Thank GOD you don't watch soap operas (or do you?)...

I have a hard time finding anything worthwhile on the TV, let alone watch
soaps. The sheens are outclassed by thier fellow actors who keep their
political points of view to themselves.

RW>> As for Harrison Ford, well, his best role was as the Captain of the
RW>> Millenium Falcon, in Star Wars. Next best, was as Bob Falfa, the
 RW>> crazy

PL> I never considered him a "good actor"... just noted his part in the
PL> movie as a younger actor.

He proved otherwise as he matured from AG to Star Wars. The first movie he
made in the Indiana Jones series was his best, the latter two he slacked
off, IMO.

PL> He got lucky and cast in a role that made him known with Star Wars.
PL> His Indiana Jones bit never showed good acting skills as the nature
PL> of the movies were "comic book" and almost aybody could have done
 PL> that.

Did you know that he actually has a fear of snakes? That was no act.

PL> The note was like if one goes back and watches "twighlight zone"
PL> episodes and sees how any actors they can recognize who later became
 PL> famous.

Even James Dean did those.

RW>> driver of the fast and now famous black 55 Chevy, in American
 RW>> Graffitti.

PL> Ah... the movie that spawned "Happy Days".

Maybe. However, it did spawn two sequels. More American Grafitti and
another which escapes me at the moment.

PL> I didn't realize that was him, as I haven't watched America graffitti
 PL> in a good 15 years.

Hell, it's been on TCM at least twice a year in the last 4 years. In their
letterbox format, which looks awfully small on a HD wide screen TV.

PL> I betcha I'll see it soon though, since you mentioned it :)

I taped it a long time ago (c198x) when it was first played on HBO. That
was in VHS format and has since gone bad. Since then, I've recorded it to
DVD from TCM, but again, it's in their small letterbox format. One day
they'll buy a HD transmitter and show it full wide screen.

PL> On a close... since the father/son actor thing came up. The
PL> Sutherlands... Donald or Kiefer? Who do you think is better?

Donald, of course. He's got the maturity of an experienced actor, the son
only has the advice of that actor and his own point of view, which isn't
the best, IMO.
