RW>> What a bunch of idiots. When VHS tapes came out with movies on them,
RW>> you couldn't just play them on any old tape deck, you had to have a
 RW>> VHS player

 MvdV> Yes...

So the VHS tape and player are/were proprietary.

RW>> ... if someone attempted to copy the tape, the recorder wouldn't
RW>> copy it, unless the copy-protection used on the tape was defeated.

MvdV> I have never had a VHS player with such limitations. TTMBOK they
 MvdV> were not sold here.

My first VHS was purchased in 1978, an RCA. It was a klunker in comparison
to the players today. It would copy anything. Later VHS machines were
capable of making copies too, but the encryption was on the tapes.

In my investigative days c1984, I came across a crook who was stealing
copyright material via VHS tape players. He'd buy or rent a legitimate
copy and then reproduce it on several VHS machines at once, then sell
them as legitimate copies. Eight, I think, all mounted in a 'rack' like a
repeater rack, made for easy mobility with wheels, etc... It was hidden
among a bunch of similar racks with commercial and HAM radio equipment in
them. He was put out of business by the police because they didn't just
take the offending machine, they took all of the others with his
commercial business radios and of course, the HAM radios went down too.

He didn't learn from that mess, he was later tried and convicted of
manufacturing and selling drugs. I think he's out of prison now...

RW>> When satellites began to repeat uploaded programming, they were open
RW>> to any and all. Then the premium movie channels began to scramble
RW>> their signals. You had to have the proper receiver with the
 RW>> de-scrambling device installed.

MvdV> Sure, And when I paid for the service I could view the programmes,
MvdV> tape then and do whatever I wanted with them.

As long as they were for your use, that was ok. You violated copyrights if
you copied them and sold or gave them away.

RW>> Yes, all of this technology is easy to defeat, so they used their
RW>> influence to get lawmaking bodies to make it illegal
RW>> to receive and descramble their signal with anything but their
 RW>> equipment.

 RW>> What's different about this?

MvdV> The difference is that DRM impaired stuff makes it impossible to
MvdV> make full use of something that I have paid for in full.

You've paid for something that has limited use in your mind, but it's a
product that is made to play music, but is also intended to keep you from
violating copyrights. You can blame the likes of the Felons for that.

MvdV> I have a legal right to make copies for personal use of something I
MvdV> have legally obtained. DRM restricts me in that right.

Yeup. But you can blame the likes of the Felon for that. If the
copyrighted material wasn't copied and sold, or even given away, there'd
be no need for DRM.

MvdV> Would you buy a car that won't drive on certain roads?

Cars aren't capable of violating copyrighted material. However, I own a
few that won't. They'll go anywhere on any road but I won't drive them off
the road. One of them I will, however. The difference is that one of them
is made to go on or off road, but the others would be hard pressed to go
much farther than the side of the road.

MvdV> Would you buy a car that only runs on fuel from company X?

They're being sold today. Around South Texas, you can only buy the fuel
recommended by the manufacturer from one company. These are GM pickup
trucks that use 85% alcohol mixed with 15% gasoline. I suspect that
they'll be the first of a new breed of alternative fuel vehicles that'll
be coming in the future. OTH, there is the 'hybrid' pickup that will run
on anything you can put in it.

MvdV> I won't and for the same reason there will be no DRM crippleware in
 MvdV> my house.

Just because you can't violate copyrights...
