Direct Dial Countries
Simply dial "1" + the area code then the phone number for calls to Canada,
Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and other Caribbean countries. You do
not need to call Customer Service before dialing these countries. Accrued
charges will appear on your monthly bill.

Japan's country code 81 is a direct dial country. $3.49/minute to a
landline or $3.62 to a mobile phone...

There are a lot of countries on that list.

All Other Countries
To place an international call to all other countries from the U.S., dial
011 + Country Code + City/Area Code (if required) + Local Number.

The wireless to wireless calls cost more than wireless to landline to
those countries who charge for calls to wireless phones. i.e. to Holland a
wireless to wireless call is $1.73/min, while to a landline it's only
$1.49/min.

I don't have a long distance carrier on my landline, so I have no idea
what the charge would be to call Japan from it. I don't answer it when it
rings either, saving that for the node, if I ever get one.
