CS>> Well, my rental fellow seems to have decent handymen that do the

CS> Naw, I'm just funning with him on the price.

Well good Lord, I would hope so.

 CS> I know good work

CS> with 4,000$ to do just the roof over the garage as i'd have most
CS> the house done for the same or a bit less and this was just a part.
CS> He checked and came up with 1,000$ for that remaining bit.

IMO, in this area, roofing isn't that God awful bad on price. Average rate is
$350 per square (every 100 sq. feet for rip off of old *single layer* and
installation of new, and disposal of debris ... materials included). Most of
the homes in this area average 22 square. Generaly the price is rounded off to
7 grand.

CS> One could *wish* it would cost like the same as a mcdonalds dinner,
CS> but it wont if the work is to be good.

Hell... any roofer coming in isn;t paying his boys too have Mickey D's.
Quality work depends on quality help as well, and quality help you can count on
consistantly requires you allow them to live as hard working men should.

PL>> $80 an hour for plumbing is CHEAP in this neck of the woods considerin

CS> Cheap where I am too although he has one who does *minor* fixes for
CS> less, same as if you did them yourself but just couldnt.

Sounds more like a "handyman" than a plumber, and would likely work under the
radar of permits. In Schenectady you can actually go to JAIL for soldering two
pieces of copper together without the proper permit ... I know somebody who
did. They take teh idea that the city owns the water supply VERY seriously.
AMAZINGLY eenough, you can play with the gas lines with no restrictions... the
city doesn't own that supply. With the potential for disaster concerning the
gas, I never could understand the logic behind the view of the city on it.

CS> Little stuff. He'd take a job, be there 6 hours, take 1 hour of it
CS> in little breaks, and charge 4 hours at 20$. If he thought the
CS> folks needed more and couldnt pay, he'd just sorta 'show up' to
CS> 'finish a detail he forgot' with no charge. Thats just how Don is.
 CS> Guess it's how I am too.

Nobody is in biz to give away stuff... but... but... so any times have I done
work after being in somebodies home, knowing they couldn't afford, and KNOWING
in my mind that it was a dangerous sittuation that I couldn;t leave. I just did
the work, parts, materials, and all. No... it's not a weekly thing, but I've
done it and always felt more enriched by it. Somtimes it isn;t just all about
the money. (DAMN! I HATE MYSELF for saying that!).

I remember the first time I ever did that... without details, myself and my
partner at the time were driving away (had travelled some30 miles just to give
an estimate) and ten miles into back home of talking about the sittuation, and
how the old lady remindedme of my grandmother, I just asked my partner "Ted"...
"You thinin' whaddam thinkin'?" ... just a look and the vehicle was turned
around. It was one of the most enriching days of my life. Even though it
actually cost me cash, it was a day that riches weren't counted in that manner
and I felt like the richest man in the world. Humble little lady weouldn't
take nothing for free, and her little bit of cash was no longer good to us, so
the kielbasa and kraut she made us was the best paycheck I ever got.

JEEZE! I'm gettin' old. Forgot about that one for awhile I guess. Thanks
Carol for refreshing that.

Phil
