RC>> That was how FidoNet echoes were operated for years and years.
RC>> It is only a recent invention that you lot came up with that
 RC>> throws all that away.

BF> If y'all started to read what we're trying to tell you,
BF> rather than stop at the first sentence you don't like, you
 BF> wouldn't be so misinformed.

the how is one to hit each point in the conversation? ;)

BF> I was trying to tell you that for as long as I've been in
BF> fidonet (almost twenty years now) we've never had the
BF> principle of one single dictator running the entire show.

wrong... want me to name a beta echo or two that was run in exactly that
fashion? care to tell me who owned them?

BF> We used distributed moderating, as I started to tell you, when I
BF> immediately was dismissed as a fascist and who knows what.

don't kick a cow patty on a hot day...

BF> This never was a problem, since usually there were no more
BF> than a dozen or two BBSs connected to any one echo.

small potatoes... haven't you yet caught that some of the discussions are
taking into account echos where there are hundreds of systems with hundreds of
users??

BF> This was one of the big advantages of only allowing BBSs to be
BF> directly connected to the network rather than one-man systems,

what's the difference?

BF> we could reach thousands of users via just a handful of systems,

still just a handfull of systems... just a larger handful...

BF> and the dozen or so distributed moderators knew very well who
BF> most of "their" users were, so they had no problem neither
BF> moderating nor cooperating with the other moderators.

i don't see how that would change or effect things...

BF> If you, during all those years, have been using a totally
 BF> different moderating system,

here you appear to be trying to apply some sort of physicality to moderating as
if there's been books and papers written on it for others to follow... there
hasn't and each moderator is left to use his own style with the only
restriction being that it is *re*active since proactive doesn't exist in
fidonet...

BF> then so be it. I can only say, that it's easy now, to understand
BF> why the decline of the Z1 BBSs have been so much faster than that
 BF> of the Z2 ditto.

the method of moderating has had nothing to do with why folk let fidonet in
Z1... the single item that caused it was the US government's pulling back off
the internet and stopped funding for it and at the same time opening it up for
commercialization... that simple act of commercializing the internet made it
easier for the general populous to gain access to the internet... your own zone
is and has gone thru this, as well... just not as soon since, just like
fidonet, the movement originated here in the US and has flowed outward to the
rest of the world from here...

RC>> And somehow, you think this is progress.

BF> To you guys, I honestly think it would be, to use it would
 BF> be business as usual.

 RC>> Unbelieveable.

BF> I know. That's exactly my thoughts when I hear about the
BF> preferred method of moderating, echo ownership, elist
BF> obedience and all the other remarkable behaviour at your neck
 BF> of the woods. :)

you and others are putting too much emphasis on certain aspects without
understanding the whys and wherefores as well as jumping to conclusions and
interpreting that which is stated into something that is not...
