I remember that but that policy didn't come in until two or three years after
Zone 2 joined the Fidonet. When I joined in 1987 I was put into Net 511 and my
node number was 2:511/110. Then I moved nets because of an uncooperative host
and so I became 2:503/110.

I think it must have been Henk Wevers (the first Z2C) who originally numbered
the nets and it was at a time before zones and regions became part of the Fido
numbering system. Or it may have come from the folks in the USA because Net
500 (HCC Net) was Holland), Net 501 was Sweden (I'm looking at the nodelist
for 30th October 1987 - the first one I was listed in), 502 was Norway, 503
(Eastern Net) was the UK, 504 was Norway, 505 was Denmark, 506 (London Net)
was the UK, 507 (Kraut's Inn) was West Germany, 508 (Nethland1) was Holland,
509 (Tech Net) was West Germany, 510 (Britnet #1) was the UK, 511 (Central
Net) was the UK...

And so on.

Then Regions and Zones were invented. So Europe became Zone 2 and it was then
that that the logical numbering system started taking place, i.e. zone 2
regions all start with 2*. Thus Sweden (Net 501) became region 20, Norway (Net
502) became Region 21, Finland (Nets 504 and 515) became Region 22, Denmark
(Net 505) became Region 23, West Germany (Nets 507 and 509) became Region 24,
The UK (Nets 503, 506 510 and 511) became Region 25....

And so on.

Then very late 1987 or early 1988 we were told to change our net numbers to
the logical system. Thus, in the UK, Net 503 became Net 253, Net 506 became
Net 254, Net 510 became Net 257, and Net 511 became Net 255.

These changes caused a lot of very bad feeling because the then R25C was very
bad at communicating. He simply told each UK Net host to change the number of
the net without explaining why. The suspicion between RCs, hosts and nodes
never really recovered from that and, as a result, the true Fidonet spirit was
all but lost!

Short history lesson!!
