Once in a while I do things for the Executive Director of EAZA (the European
Association of Zoos) and the AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums [North
America]).
 
Steve Irwin was generally considered to be a clown. Under the current
circumstances none of the above will be glad to aknowledge that since we should
speak no evil about the dead.
 
There are numerous cases where he deliberately did stupid things and often put
the life of co-workers at risk.
 
Because of the whole crew which he always brought along, he personally upset
many populations of many species and had no problem in "building a set" like
for example the old Cousteau also did. People believing they saw a natural
setting have been fooled by Irwin more than once because he recreated a
"natural environment" to have better camera-settings and lighting-conditions.
 
Quite well known is the episode, not documented on film, where he chases
penguins from an ice-shelf in Antarctica well knowing the waters are infested
by ferocious sea-leopards and killer-whales.
 
He was a jerk and should've been arrested a lot of times.
 
Taking a 9 month old baby in the cage of a 14-foot boa during feeding-time.
Ever seen how quick such a reptile can be and how strong it is?
 
He was an idiot. My opinion of course, but I'm not alone.
 
He was not an environmentalist nor a conservationist. He just made programmes
on the subject because he was well paid for it.
 
His death is tragic, as every human's death is tragic. But it is not more
tragic than the death at young age of my former colleague whom we will be
burrying on Wednesday.
