Beans or no beans, there are many different types of modern chili and few 
are actually bad (except for Emerald's Chili, tastes like spaghetti).  But 
the origin of "Chili" comes from the cattle ranchers.  They would take 
cattle on long drives for grazing and to market.  While on these long drives 
they would eat "beans" -- and after a week or two -- that's about all that 
was left to eat was just beans.  One many occasions these Texan ranchers 
would meet up with the Mexican ranchers taking their long horn up north. 
They would exchange types of food or one would sell stuff to the other, and 
wouldn't ya know it -- the dried chili pepper met up with the pot of beans. 
"Chili" was born....  The last time we had a cattle drive was 1976 - when I 
was just a kid.  But I remember cattle drive chili very well.  It didn't 
have hamburger, it had "steak" -- large chunks of dried beef soaked and 
cooked all day until it was moist.  It was more soupy that I make it, and it 
didn't have any tomatoes either.  But -- it was really good.
