Years ago when I lived in Virginia, several grocery stores had concrete pylons
lined up in front of their stores along the sidewalk. they were spaced far
enough apart to allow people to walk in between but close enough to prevent the
passage of a shopping cart. They had a loading zone, so you parked your cart on
the sidewalk, pull your car up and unload the cart.

I havent seen that down here but it is a nifty idea.

What most retailers do is they have buggy corrals located throughout the
parking lot, spaced in each row of spaces like every 10 slot/spaces.

No matter where one parks, a short hop to shove your empty buggy into.

The store will send an employee out hourly or as needed to retrieve.

Problem is, many are too lazy to put the carts into the corrals.

Your swedish idea sounds good, but the penny pinchers would never implement it.

Grocery stores down here including those owned by Dutch Royal Ahold ( Hi
Michiel) which are Giant Food, Bi-Lo et al, have decided to eliminate the jobs
reserved for part time teenagers, whose jobs were to load groceries, retrieve
carts.. Sams, Wal-mart and Home Depot are only retailers I see whom employ
lotmen.

Over there do you have what I call "parking lot vultures"..

A parking lot vulture is someone who is driving around for a parking space,
most often than not, one closest to the door, they will spot you leaving the
store, follow you and if they see you are in a primo spot, they will stop, put
on turn signal, block the lane and wait on you to finish loading your car and
leave? I suspect you do, you probably cant blame them, unless you happen to
pull into a lane looking for a spot yourself and one of them is blocking your
way? But the rub is, most I see are not old or handicapped people.
