The American embassador to Hawaii was a certain mr.Dole ... the same mr.Dole of
the canned pineapples, the main produce of Hawaii.
 
He saw his trade threatened and called for American troops "to protect American
interests in the region" ... meaning his pineapple business..
 
The US troops were sent and the independant and internationally recognised
country of Hawaii was violently by the use of military force occupied into
submission.
 
If I ever saw a rewrite of histiry, this is one.
 
It is true, but you did not mention, that the Hawaiian royals were rather
irresponsible re: the country's assets.
 
Queen Lili'uokalani (she was childless I seem to remember) started too late
with reforms. As heir to the throne she appointed Princess Ka'iulani who was
well regarded all over. She was in England at the time of the invasion and went
to the US to plea with President Grover Cleveland to restore the naton of
Hawaii as an independant country. Cleveland was willing but the Congres
opposed.
 
Ka'iulani became very sick, most likely tuberculosis and learned about the
death of her friend Robert Louis Stevenson, her half-sister Annie Cleghorn and
her British guardian mr. Davies.
 
During a horseride in the Hawaiian mountains she was caught in a storm and
developped a fever which eventually caused her death at the age of 23 in 1899
although it is widely believed she died of a broken heart after the fall of her
beloved country.
 
In 2007, English filmmaker Marc Forby started production of a about the
princess' attempt to restore her nation's monarchy.
 
I'm looking forward to seeing it after having visited all those places in 1995.
