======================================
BF>> That's the problem.
BF>> We offered to help after Katrina and so did the Brits but you refused that
BF>> help.
BF>> Food for NATO soldiers weren't good enough for the people of NO etc. so I
BF>> guess that you hadn't heard about that.
BF>> Swedish soldiers are helping to clean up the mess in Afghanistan too so we
BF>> do whatever we can with our limited resources.

JB> I can't speak for everyone, but whenever I hear about offers of aid from
JB> other countries, it makes me feel good. Despite how big we are as a
JB> country, or all the wealth and technology we've amassed, sometimes we get
JB> a run of bad luck too. I like to see that there's still countries out
JB> there who are willing to offer us a hand when they think we might need it.
JB> Especially in this day and age.

That's how it should be anyway.

JB> As for why we don't take people up on it more often, I have an idea on it.
JB> I think, to be honest, that we don't want others "in the way".

That's what we have been trying to say all the time. Either it's the American
way
or no way.

 JB> Usually,
JB> we have a good number of rescue and medical personnel to deal with most
JB> situations. We have equipment for search and recovery. We have supplies
JB> stored up to get to people in need (yes, even for Katrina, but that was
JB> just a mismanaged blunder). We also have policies and guidelines for how
JB> certain things should be carried out. Things which other countries
JB> wouldn't be aware of, no more than we would be aware of theirs if the
 JB> situation were reversed.

True.

JB> There's also liability issues. If somebody comes over here and gets hurt,
JB> then what? Who pays for it? Who takes the blame if they want to hold
JB> somebody responsible? Worse yet, what if a foreign doctor treats a
JB> patient, only for them to get worse, or die? People like to sue in this
JB> country when they suspect negligence (whether that's the case or not). But
JB> who do they sue if it's somebody who was just over here for a short time
JB> to help? They sue the government, of course, for allowing people not
JB> certified in this country to perform medical care.

Much I hear on Fox (I watch Fox because there aren't many alternatives for me
here in Thailand) is about sue-ing, yes.

JB> I know people of other countries might see it as a bit of a slap in the
JB> face when we turn them down, but at the same time, I think those
JB> governments don't really expect to be taken up on their offers when they
JB> make them. Part of it is probably just to express political good will.
JB> Such things happen even on smaller personal levels between average folks.
JB> I bet you yourself have done it. Sometimes you offer something to
JB> somebody even if you know they don't truly need it, just to be polite or
 JB> helpful.

Yup.

JB> We also get countries like Iran offering their help. Your guess is as
JB> good as mine as to what their true agenda is on something like that. But
JB> in their case, they probably expect us to turn them down purely due to our
JB> current relations, and then they can use that to make it look like we
JB> snubbed them even when offering "help". Yet if we accepted such help, a.)
JB> who knows what kind of people would come into the country under the guise
JB> of aid workers, and b.) it would also be a political tool, because then
JB> they could say "even the mighty America needs our help", to further their
JB> anti-American propaganda. This is all personal speculation of course, but
JB> hopefully you can see where I'm coming from with this.

I can.

JB> I just wouldn't take it personal if I were you when help is rejected. I
JB> don't think there's usually any hard feelings meant by it. And I doubt
JB> I'm the only one that appreciates the offers.

We all might need help sometimes so I understand what you mean.
