Nancy and I knew a couple who owned a pizza store in San Diego, 'Ciros'.
They made the best pizza in town, bar none. We usually had pizza there
every Friday night. Nancy knew them through her father, who sponsered
Ciro from Sicily and his wife (name escapes me now). We  were invited to
their house for dinner many times...they put on a spread that left nothing
out in Italian dishes. (I knew of them from an earlier time when their
19yo daughter was murdered - her room was still the way she left it 15
years later) They had a rec room the size of my house, with a big screen
TV that looked small in comparison to the room. Imported Italian marble
entry way and a wide C shaped stairway to the upper floor. When they
retired and sold the pizza store, the new owner ruined the pizza formula
by adding a lot of garlic...we ate there twice after that and never went
back. We thought that was the last of the truely Italian pizza stores, but
Nancy found one closer to home that had comparable, but not quite as good,
pizza. Sicilian of course.

The best kind...Ciro (above) made his own sausage and not only put it on
pizza, but sold it over the counter to the public.

Where I grew up (120 west of Chicago) we were blessed with many Italian
families and of course, they ran their own pizza stores. I can't say any
of them were bad, but I had my favorites then too. My fav was on a corner
on the main drag through town and next to an A&W drive-in.  It was an old
two story house with the front remodeled with large glass (stoe like)
windows and a glass door in the middle. After I graduated from high
school, I worked that summer in a gas station across the street and
enjoyed either pizza for lunch or A&W burgers...There was even a Capones
pizza store, a distant relative of Al Capone...
