In 1985 Nancy and I wanted to see America a little closer than you can see
it by flying and didn't feel like driving, so we took the AMTRAK from San
Diego north to Portland, Oregon, then east across the northern states to
Madison, Wisconsin, where my dad picked us up and he drove us to their
place in Illinois. On the return trip, he drove us to a bus station in
Rockford, Illinois and from there we took a Grayhound to Chicago. We
stayed in a hotel on the lake shore (the taxi ride from the bus station is
another story), which had a view up and down the lake. The first night
there, we ordered in a locally made pizza, which I kept warm on the back
of the TV. We had it for breakfast the next morning.

I had been to Chicago many times while I lived in the area, but Nancy had
never been there. Her mother gave her $1500 to spend on a shopping spree
for clothes and shoes. We spent the entire day at one store, buying
everything in sight. I even got one polo shirt out of the deal. The
problem with all of these clothes she bought was that this was September
and they had their 'fall' clothes on the racks. When she got back to San
Diego, she couldn't wear them unless it was an unusually cool day in San
Diego. This was the September in which there had been an earthquake in
Mexico City and my MIL had been using my Amateur Radio to keep track of
what the HAMs were doing to aide the people there.
