TR> I'm not opposed to legalizing (or just de-criminalizing) marajuana.

TR> I don't see it causing the terrible terrible harm those who are in
TR> law enforcement and `government' run agencies claim it does.

Go down to Logan Ave and Commercial street and look around.

TR> True..a person can get all `smoked up' on pot and have an auto
 TR> accident.

Worse.

TR> But we have laws that deal with `driving under the influence', and
TR> its only in more recent years that drunk drivers have begun to be
TR> dealt with a bit more harshly.

What was the first name of that Penn guy who shot the cop?

TR> Thus far.......after many years, going back to the sixties......I
TR> have yet to hear of one single death that was legitimately caused by
 TR> smoking marajuana.

You hear of them everyday, they're classified as 'smoking related' deaths.

TR> And I don't mean due to someone who was a heavy marajuana user doing
TR> something foolish `while' under the influence of marajuana. I mean
TR> someone someone dying as a direct result of their marajuana use, in
TR> the same sense that someone dies as a result of being a heavy user of
TR> alcohol, and ruining one or two of their vital organs which causes
 TR> them to die.

Famous last quotes: "Last year 450,000 people died from smoking
cigarettes, Alohol killed 150,000 and another 100,000 died from legal
prescription drugs. How many died last year from the use of marijuana?
Few, if any." That was New Mexico's Gary Johnson, governor as quoted in
the NY Times, c1990s.

I'll accept all of the drug legalizers' lying statistics and demostrate
that their arguments are stupid, but you have to believe, someone who lies
in formulating an arguement is not to be trusted. That figure on
cigarette deaths is a bald faced lie.

The 450k figure refers to all "smoking-related" deaths. A "Smoking
related" death is any death that, theoretically, could be connected to
smoking - even if the person who died never came within a mile of a lit
cigarette.

"Smoking related deaths" include emphysema and other respiratory diseases,
heart attacks, and a plethora of cancers. Under the methodology used by
the American Cancer Society to come up with the stats on 'smoking related
deaths, 504,000 people die each year from insufficient exercixe and
649,000 die from improper diets. The books on 'smoking related' deaths are
so cooked that a 1993 article in the American Journal of Epidemiology was
able to show that by using the same methodology, smoking saves 277,000
lives per year.

TR> If there were such a case......or more than one.....you can bet the
TR> government health and research organs would be trumpheting those
TR> cases loudly. Those victims would be the poster boys for the DEA, and
TR> narcotics task forces all over the nation!

They already do that.

TR> So somebody wants to grow marajuana for their own use. Who cares? As
TR> long as they aren't driving a motor vehicle while under the
TR> influence, and not making a public disturbance, why should the law be
 TR> concerned?

In California, they're not.

TR> The government is stupidly ignoring a large tax base in the name of
TR> `saving' people from the ravages of marajuana, and filling jails and
TR> prisons with people who don't belong there.

It ought to stop you in your tracks that some politicians want to legalize
drugs so the government can tax them. Whenever politicians say they want
to restrict something by taxing it, you know they're lying: The very fact
that they are taxing it means that they need people to keep doing it.

TR> By the way......people would be surprised at the huge cross section
TR> of Americans who regularly use marajuana. Business owners, medical
TR> personnel, school teachers, law enforcement people, members of the
 TR> military........you name it.

That doesn't make it OK.

TR> If marajuana was legalized like tobacco and alcohol, you'd be amazed
TR> at who would `come out of the closet' after all these years.

So let's assume that alcohol and tobacco induce a dependency; ruining
lives, cause disease, depression, countless traffic injuries, fatalities
and increase the incidence of homicide and suicide. That's supposed to be
an arguement for legalizing another drug like them?
