I think it was a throw-back to the depression era. Eating under-cooked
pork in the day could get you plenty of parasitic worms. Cooking it until
it was believed to be parisite free meant that it was burnt on the outside
and very well done on the inside. Popular thinking in the day led everyone
to cook that way, no matter what they were cooking. I hated every bite of
it.

I left home when I was 18 and really got a wake up call. My best friend's
mother was full blooded Italian and boy could she cook. My first taste of
spicy food. Yummmm.

Only because I'm too old to fight the weather. I've never minded pulling
up stakes and finding greener pastures. I make friends fairly fast, so I'd
have a couch to sleep on if I wanted to stay in one place at a time.

 RN> But it must have been quite an experience for you and unforgettable.

I got smart and waited until I had completed my schooling before setting
out on my own again. Answered an ad in the Chicago Tribune for a Tool &
Die Maker at Boeing in Seattle and they hired me, sight unseen. I was in
heaven: until I got to Seattle and found that it rains more often than the
sun shines there.
