The difference in weight would be the reason to use disc brakes in lieu of
drum brakes. The more weight you tow, the more down-hill force you will
have. Thus, you'd do well to have disc brakes on a larger trailer.

That's odd. There are elecrically operated brakes that do a better job,
since they're programmed for trailer weight v tow vehicle weight. Electric
brakes must have a controller in the tow vehicle, as there is a manual
override switch in case of electric failure.

 MvdV> When the car decelerates, the inertia of the trailer makes it push
 MvdV> against the car and that activates the brake. It is a pureley
 MvdV> mechanical system. Very reliable and it works with every trailer
 MvdV> and every car combination.

Unless the tow vehicle is a light weight vehicle and the trailer isn't.

 MvdV> The only problem is that it automativally activates when going
 MvdV> downhill on contstant speed. Even if you never touch the brakes and
 MvdV> do it all with the engine, the trailer brakes will still activate
 MvdV> when going downhill. In the high mountains, this is a sure recipe

Using engine braking and lower gears should allow the tow vehicle to
regulate the trailer braking. Using the trailer brake to slow you down and
the tow vehicle brakes only when really needed will help to keep both sets
of brakes cool.

 MvdV> Several systems to prevent this have been proposed and been
 MvdV> experimented with but so far none of these have been found safe
 MvdV> enough to replace the classic push brake system. (I do not know if
 MvdV> that is the right word, in Dutch we call it "oplooprem".)

Better known in English as a 'surge' brake.

 MvdV> So far the only way is to stop at regular intervals, check the
 MvdV> brakes of the trailer and let them cool off if needed.
