Every man, woman and child on the face of this planet is a racist
and a bigot.  Indeed, everyone who has ever lived has been a racist
and a bigot.  With the possible exception of Jesus Christ.  And
some claim that entity never existed.  What we do, as individuals,
to overcome our racism and bigotry is up to us.  Some people make
every effort to do so, while others make no effort at all.  But
that does not change the basic fact of who we are.

If we want to better ourselves, and also the world in which we
live in, we will seek to do whatever we can to overcome our own
racism and bigotry, while encouraging others to do the same.
Although it may be impossible to completely overcome our own
prejudices and fears, both as individuals and a society, we can
make progress.

The subject of the Alamo has been brought up in this echo.  Many
of those who fought at the Alamo were slave owners and/or slave
traders.  Fully a quarter of the people of Texas were slave owners,
so that should not have been unexpected.  Jim Bowie made a fortune
in the slave trade, did business with the pirate Jean Lafitte, and
was very active in shady land speculation.  In fact, Bowie pledged
his allegiance to Mexico, becoming a Mexican citizen in 1830.  He
very likely fled the Alamo rather than die for a lost cause.  William
Travis left his pregnant wife, along with a pile of debt, and brought
his slave Joe to the battle.  Davy Crockett was a backwoods politician
who had been humiliated in an election, and tried to hide from the
invading Mexicans, having been captured and later executed (according to
the vast majority of historians).  Sam Houston was a notorious drunkard
who failed to send needed troops to Bexar, and did not have the brains
to order the place blown up rather than to defend against impossible
odds.  No, Houston chose to bribe Texans (the brown-skinned variety)
to join their white brothers by offering them lots of free land.
Lots and lots of free land.  All of which belonged to Mexico.

But hey.  What did we care about our little brown brothers?
We wanted their land.  So we stole it.  Now it's ours.
