Hello Robert,

On Tuesday March 24 2009 19:51, you wrote to me:

I don't understand why this is so hard for you to understand. It is like a fprm
where some fields are mandatory and some are optional, you can just leave them
blank. if you want to ordr something from a mail order company, you have to
submit an order form. Naturally you need to supply and address, or else they do
not know where to send it to. Bt things like date of birth and gender are
usually optional. They are not required to complete the deal, you can just
leave them blank.

Same for the IMEI. Of course one needs the handshake to initiate the call. But
the IMEI is an optional field, the information it contains it not needed to
make the call.

Contrary to the SNN, without that informationm the call can not be made.

 RB>>> With the proper interface

RB> ;-))) Who told you that one? Sorry, I know better.

As I said, I saw it demonstated. Not on television, in real life. Standard data
cable.

MV>> Simple is in the eye of the beholder. Once you know how to do it,
 MV>> it is simple.

RB> Interestingly enough, I've found that's not the case.

Then you had the bad luck of having a phone weher it is not as easy as the onde
I saw in the demonstration.

That is a different kettle of fish from changing the IMEI of a cell phone.
Makes me wonder WHY you wanted to change the IMEI of your phone....

RB> There are people, incidently, who consider a supervisor password (SP)

I never set passwords on the entire machine. I perceive it as just making
things difficult for myself. If any data needs to be protected, I encrypt just
the filke in question. That way, I only lose that file when I lose the
password.

RB> At any rate, there's a website that deals with this subject, and even

Now is that for the thinkpad, or for the cell phone?

RB> Knowing how in theory is nice, but without a bit of practice and

Very true. I already found that out 40 years ago. I could not make electronic
stuff to work until I *understood* what I was doing. One would think that if
one copies exactly what someone else has made, that it should work. In theory
it does, but in practise it very seldom does. It is too easy to make a simple
error. Reverse a diode or swap two resistores and it will not work. When you
*understand* how it works, you can find the error, if not, it is next to
hopeless.

Cheers, Michiel
