RB> Roy Witt wrote to Robert Bashe on Friday April 17 2009 at 12:03:

RB>>> I type with two fingers on a US keyboard too, though. Just never
RB>>> learned 10-finger touch typing, like (I assme) most people outside
RB>>> the business world. If you did, all I can do is congratulate you -

RW>> I did and type at least 50wpm still.

RB> Migawd! You're better than I will ever be, and I write for a living
 RB> (translator).

Hee...I graduated with a B in the class at 60wpm and only 3 mistakes. I
used to put that on my resume' when I was younger, but figured out that
nobody needs a high priced typist, later on.

RW>> Once you learn how to type with all of your fingers, words flow with
RW>> ease. You still have to spell them out mentally, but subconsciously
RW>> your mind trains itself to type words and not letters.

RB> Dammit, I'm envious. I liked to play the piano when I was a kid, and
RB> my folks booked me for a piano course at the local university. My
RB> only problem was that I played by ear and thus was too lazy to read
RB> notes. Can't read them to this day.

That's nothing to be ashamed of. My maternal grand mother could play the
piano to the day she died (98) and never could read music. Let her hear
the tune on the radio and she could play it with a little practice. I
remember going to the Daughters of the Revolution Xmas parties and she was
the star piano player. The only piano player, actually.

I have a video of her attempting to play the piano at her 97th birthday
party. She was deaf and blind by then and although she had this great big
smile on her face, you could tell she couldn't hear it.

RB>>> except if you also have to type German. Then you're the one at a
RB>>> disadvantage, since you'll have a problem entering the keys that
RB>>> don't exist on a US keyboard (you'll have to use the Alt-number
 RB>>> codes to enter them).

RW>> I don't have a problem entering those, since I use the Character Map
RW>> in Windoz...it's a feature many people have overlooked and is quite
RW>> useful, cut and paste. As easy as … ...

RB> And as slow as molasses. I do that sometimes too, when I need a
RB> special character like the "o" in Bjorn's name, but it's nothing I'd
RB> care to do on a regular basis. Nor can I do it here in fido, except
RB> with Alt-number codes. I write with a fido editor (GoldED, not MS
 RB> Word).

I also write in Fido with GoldEd and it does have cut and paste
capabilities (you have to turn on the mouse in your GoldEd config file).

Hold the left mouse button down on a piece of text and run the cursor
along until you want to end it, release the left mouse button and place
the cursor over the highlighted text and press the right mouse button to
copy (cut).

I just copied your first sentence in the above paragraph that way and
pasted it below.

And as slow as molasses.

RW>> ...Not to mention, there are photos there that only my
RW>> family/friends can see and photos there that I can show to the
RW>> public, if they have an account with Facebook.

RW>> Doing the same thing with photos on such places as Imageshack means
RW>> that they also have control of them.

RB> Why do you think I advised against publishing ANY private material on
RB> ANY website? And still advise against it, regardless of the website.

Well, what seems to be a flaw in Facebook is that even though I told their
software to make a certain image available, it isn't. That assures me that
the family photos on my Facebook page are very secure. Only my immediate
family and friends can see them.

RB> What leaves your own personal computer is public domain, regardless
RB> of what anyone promises. Call it paranoia - maybe you're right. But
 RB> better safe than sorry.

And that isn't true either. My son's website now has images on it that
can't be copied. Now. He learned that lesson quick enough.

RW>> In Facebook, he doesn't worry about it, since only family and
RW>> friends can see it, unless he opens it to the public.

RB> Or unless the site is hacked. Lotsa luck.

Not many sites can be hacked these days. Most of them are using Linox
based software and it isn't easy to hack that.

RB> I send (private) images I want others to see to them personally via
RB> email. Anything else is (or as far as I'm concerned) in the public
RB> domain and can land anywhere in the next 20 years.

Believe it or not, your 'private' images sent via email are easier to
pirate than my images on Facebook. Mine are uploaded to a secure site,
while yours traverse the internet from server to server, who knows how
many times they're bounced to a pirate site.
