RB>>> PAL is the TV system, like NTSC in the States.

 RW>> NTSC is no more.

RB> Really? So how many millions of older TVs have been junked?

Who knows? Many people have replaced them with HDTVs, while those who
can't afford to, have an opportunity to buy a subsidized converter box, if
they're lucky enough to get the discount coupon before they run out. That
cost is minimal with the coupon, about $60 without one.

RB> I know the government was planning to subsidize digital receivers,
RB> but that doesn't say anything about the TVs and what signal they
 RB> take.

The DTV receivers put out an analog signal, which those older TVs can
use. It utilizes right and left audio and one video output for more modern
analog TVs (VCRs too) and an RF out for those that don't have the RLV
input jacks...

RB>>> Your TV receiver still runs the pertinent system regardless of the
 RB>>> method of transmission.

RW>> Yes, but the system also enhances it to digital mode.

RB> "The system"? An NTSC TV runs NTSC, period.

Doesn't matter, the video is enhanced. Putting a switch box between
antenna input and DTV box input and you'll be able to see a slight
improvement over the standard analog picture from the antenna. Of course,
when the analog transmitters go off the air, this is a mute point.

RB> Which it gets from the digital receiver. The only time a TV runs on a
RB> digital signal is when it's a modern one with an HDMI input direct
 RB> from the digital receiver.

A DTV signal received over the air doesn't have anything to do with an
HDMI in/output, rather the old RCA RF connector or RLV is used.

Even on my HDTV. It has six selectable inputs. Each input can use RGB,
S-Video or RLV, while only two can use HDMI and/or RF.

RB>>> As for DVB-T and DVB-S, we've been receiving satellite broadcasts
RB>>> here in Germany for years,

RW>> My first satellite system was carted home in the back seat and trunk
 RW>> of my 1970 Firebird, c1976.

RB> Your first _analog_ satellite system.

Of course, there was nothing else available at the time. I don't see those
giant 10' dish antennas anymore either, which means those sats are
probably not there anymore.

RB> They turned off analog broadcasting from the satellites here several
RB> years ago too, which made you buy and mount a new digital LNB on the
RB> dish and digital receiver. No new dish or TV were required.

No new LNB is required here. They just replace the indoor receiver with a
DTV output and that's it.

RW>>>> GSM is also used in the US...That's why it's real name is Global
 RW>>>> System for Mobile communications.

RB>>> Also used, yes. Exclusively used, no, in contrast to Europe.

 RW>> More exclusively than not.

RB> Ever hear the expression "that's like being a 'little' pregnant"?

Yes, a little pregnant would be first trimester when the bulge in the
belly isn't there yet. It's also easy to be 'not pregnant' in that stage.

RB> But I agree that the GSM system appears to dominate in the States as
 RB> well as here.

Just got back from the doc's office. Her nurse is pregnant and she looks
like she's going to pop any minute now. She said she had two weeks to
go, but I don't think she'll last that long. I'll find out next month when
I go back.
