Ärende: SCART and other signal plugs
====================================
Hello Bob,

On Saturday May 09 2009 19:06, you wrote to me:

MV>> Not quit. The consumer has the power to 'vote with the feet'. Many

RB> And buy what instead, if there is no competition? I don't like the

RB> cinch plugs or something like that.

Three is enough. And how abour S-video?

RB> You can't, since there is none.

It is true that *by now* there is not much alternative. But there have been
alternatives in the past. Asw I see it, a successful standard is one that
gaines wide acceptance. And since in the real world - contary to FidoNet - they
know that maintaining multiple standards drives upo the cost of products and
opens the door wider to design flaws, the natural result is that eventually the
most successful standard eventuallly drives out the competitive standards. The
fact that there hardly are alternatives left is proof of the success of SCART.

That it is not your preferred result is your bad luck. Happens to me all the
time as well. I seem to have the gift of making wrong choices in this respect
too. When I became a HAM, I choose the N connector. The HAM community
eventually settled on BNC for > 30 MHz and UHF for < 30 MHz. When coax for TV
became popular there was the 13 mm connetpor and the 10 mm connector. I choose
the 13 mmm. The 19 mmm became the standard...

Speaking aut garbage.. some of thes 10 mm coax connectors really are. It is not
the standard as such, it is the implementation. Luckily we see a move towards
the S connetor, which is much better.

RB> So I use SCART plugs, grinding my teeth at the inconvenience and
RB> difficulty of plugging them into anything.

Bob, you are a grumpy old man. Why don'you simply accept that SCART is the
choice that was made. That is the backside of living in a worlds where you are
not King. You can't always get your way.

MV>> I never had a problem with it. In fact my VCR is still connected
MV>> in a daisy chain with the DVB-C receiver to the TV. It works
 MV>> perfectly.

Rosa's eldest sister had a "handyman" install her box for digital cable TV. He
instalaled a switch to connect the VCR and DVD players. Didn'work very well, I
threw out the switch and daisy chanid it. Now it works fine.

RB> In that case, you'll have to visit me to rework my system. I found
RB> that multiple inputs led to chaos.

As you mentioned in another message, it is a two hour drive from you to the
Dutch border. It is another hour from there to my place. You don't really think
I am going to make a 6 hour round trip just tp prove this point do you?

MV>> You either had the bad luck to have equipement that does not fully
MV>> comply with the standard or you failed to understand it and
 MV>> configured it incorrectly.

RB> Michiel, I don't want to "understand" it, I want to _use_ it. In this
RB> case, you can consider me a "normal consumer".

We live in a world of technology. "Normal" consumers of today are in mostly the
same position as people that could not read 100 years ago. If you want to keep
up, you heve to make an effort to understand how things work.

RB>>> There's a reason why you now can buy switches with one SCART
RB>>> outlet and three or four inlets, with buttons to select the
 RB>>> proper inlet.

MV>> Yes, there is a reason. The reason is that there always is a
MV>> market for things that people will buy when they do not understand
MV>> how to properly use things...

RB> Pretty snooty. And wrong, at least in my case.

I will give you the benefit of the doubt and consider that you may have
equipment that does not fully or not correctly implement the SCART standard.

RB> I'll be waiting for your visit.

Why don't you load the stuff into your car and come to me? I will provide
lunch.

RB>>> And maybe not. The guy who cracked DCSS writes books about
 RB>>> hacking nowadays.

MV>> And some other guy was lured to the US with an excuse and was
 MV>> arrested...

RB> Mind telling me what DRM cracks have to do with attempted child
 RB> seduction?

You tell me.

RB> You're as single-minded on this as I am on crooked politicians.

Am I? It seems that you are the one thnking about child seduction. I was
thinking about the many cases of people who were arrested in the US for
annoying the powers that be in the content related industry. Dmitry Sklyarov is
an example: http://www.linux.com/feed/14337

Cheers, Michiel
