RW>> If you're going to have a union of states, as in the EU, then I

RW>> Germany would equally apply to France, etc..

RB> Fortunately or unfortunately, this is not the case. Nor is the EU a
RB> "union of states". It is merely an economic association with some
RB> political context and definite limits on its ability to regulate
 RB> affairs.

So it's not the same as the model ya'll wish it to be like.

RB>>>>> And on the basis of EU regulations on prohibitioin of trade
RB>>>>> restrictions within the EU, I would guess this applies throughout
 RB>>>>> the EU.

RW>>>> If it doesn't, it should. It is a 'union' of states, afterall.
RW>>>> Each state should be allowed the benefits of inter-state commerce
RW>>>> without worrying about inter-state taxes. However, it sounds like
 RW>>>> that isn't so.

RB>>> How so? There are no inter-state taxes as far as I'm aware.

RW>> That would be an error of your union. The EU legislators should be
RW>> setting interstate law that the states in the union must comply
 RW>> with.

RB> As I mentioned, there are no interstate taxes to my knowledge. That
RB> doesn't mean that all the EU countries have the same VAT levels -
RB> they don't. Only that there are no taxes on imports and exports
 RB> from/to other EU countries.

There aren't any here, either. But that doesn't mean that a state cannot
charge a fee to register an out of state vehicle. Like Texas, who charges
a $90 fee to bring an out of state vehicle into Texas and register it.
California used to do that to the tune of $300/vehicle, but it was shot
down as being un-Constitutional. If anyone protests here, it will be shot
down in Texas as well. Nobody rich enough who cares has challenged it yet.

I found a way around it. I registered one vehicle while I still had my
California DL...Once I obtained a Texas DL, I registered the rest of my
vehicles and didn't have to pay the $90 import fee on them.

RB>>> What I was describing (in part) were the different VAT levels in
RB>>> the various EU members, which make it advantageous to buy where the
RB>>> VAT is high and import into a country where it's lower.

RW>> There shouldn't be any different levels of VAT under the EU.

RB> That's the theory. The practice is otherwise, although the Germans
RB> love to point out that their VAT levels are lower than those in many
RB> EU countries, giving them the "right" to increase the VAT. They
RB> conveniently ignore the other tax burdens in other countries.

Kinda like California...

RB>>>>> Right. And the whole topic revolves around importation from
 RB>>>>> ANOTHER country.

 RW>>>> Like Canada and Mexico.

RB>>> If you BUY there and import into the USA. Not merely if the cars
RB>>> were assembled or manufactured there and sold in the USA.

RW>> Each of the vehicles manufactured there are also sold there.

RB> Sorry, but the statement means nothing. We're talking about facts,
RB> not about "can be". Only cars sold OUTSIDE the USA are the subject
 RB> here.

Camaros were made in Canada (I think that's OUTSIDE the US, at least it
was the last time I checked)...they were sold there as well. Dodge pickups
are made in Mexico (another place that is OUTSIDE the US) and they sell
them there as well. Both were/are imported and sold here too. Pontiac
recently sold a vehicle they called the GTO, which is a re-badged
Australian made vehicle and imported and sold here too.

RW>>>> Foreign cars purchased overseas are covered by factory warranties,
RW>>>> just as if they were domesticly made.

RB>>> That statement is full of loopholes, since you don't say _where_
RB>>> the factory warranties are valid (naturally they are valid where
RB>>> the car was sold) and you also don't define "domestically" (it can
RB>>> mean the USA OR the country where the car was sold).

RW>> Foreign cars are serviced under warranty here at any dealership that
RW>> services those vehicles. The factory pays the dealer to service cars
RW>> in warranty. And when I state domestic, I mean here. Anything else
 RW>> is a foreign vehicle.

RB> I remain doubtful in the case of foreign-purchased cars.

If you went to Canada and bought a Canadian made Camaro, it could have
been serviced in any US, GM dealership. If you went to Mexico and drove
home in your Mexican made Dodge pickup, it too could be serviced in any
Dodge dealership in the US.

RB>>> At any rate, I seriously doubt whether a foreign-made car sold
RB>>> outside the USA and imported into the country would be serviced
RB>>> under warranty without some problems arising.

RW>> If it is still under factory warranty, it can be serviced in any
RW>> dealership that sells/services that make of vehicle. That's why
 RW>> they're called dealerships.

RB> Good luck. Maybe you're right.

Why would I need luck for that?
