Hat's off to you Michiel for a fairly well written article that is not
biased (or close enough to be considered such) that is forward
thinking.  ;)

Just because a given piece of software is not IPv6 compatible does not
mean that it will not be usable in an IPv6 environment.  It simply
means that it will have to have helper applications.  There are
already helper applications in the works that will help translate from
IPv6 to IPv4 and back again.

This would mean that you would be possible to use non (native) IPv6
applications on an IPv6 network via these helper applications that do
IPv4 <-> IPv6 protocol (header) translation.  Most protocols that are
in use do not do any thing very fancy in the IPv4 / TCP headers,
rather they put the logic in the payload.  This payload does not need
to change, just the way that it is transported from end to end.

I foresee such helper (protocol translation) applications to be fairly
popular and possibly generic as there are quite a few other (non
FidoNet specific) protocols that are equally impacted.

I agree that this could / would work.  However this will make IPv4
connected BBSs even more isolated in such as visitors will not be able
to simply telnet to them any more.  I think it will in effect turn the
IPv4 connected BBSs in to an isolated island much like an isolated LAN
(even if it is a wide area connection).

Though, I do see a possibility for something like this.  Namely what
if there were gateway system that ran the IPv4 <-> IPv6 helper
programs that translated from IPv6 addresses to other IPv4 only
systems with in said isolated island.
