Wrong, as usual...

"Living with Wild Bears in Alaska
by Timothy Treadwell, Jewel Palovak - Nature - 1999 - 208 pages
Crammed with little-known bear lore and facts, much of which Treadwell has
gleaned from his own research, this is the first book to reveal the
day-to-day..."

Timothy Treadwell

Timothy Treadwell (April 29, 1957-October 5, 2003), born Timothy Dexter,
was an American bear enthusiast, environmentalist, amateur naturalist, and
documentary film maker, who lived among the coastal grizzly bears of
Katmai National Park in Alaska for approximately 13 seasons. At the end of
his thirteenth season in the park in 2003, he and his girlfriend Amie
Huguenard were killed and eaten by a grizzly bear. An audio recording of
the attack survived. Treadwell's life, work, and death were the subject of
the 2005 documentary film by Werner Herzog titled Grizzly Man.

Two Ls...

WD> He considerd himself the Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey of the
WD> Grizzlies, with the exception that Goodall and Fossey were scientists
WD> while he was an adventurer.

See above...

 WD> Treadwel

Two Ls...

WD> was cited numerous times by Park Rangers for playing with bear cubs
WD> whose mother was not around, that's the same as playing Russian
WD> roulette with only 1 empty chamber. The way how he approached
WD> bears was considered "harrassing wildlife" by Park Rangers which was
WD> obvious from the documentary he made for the Discovery Channel called
 WD> "Grizzly Diaries".

Yeah, he 'harrssed them bars' like that for 13 years...you can see his
brand of 'harrassment' in his film of the events called Grizzly Man.

 WD> Treadwel

Two Ls...

WD> was cited several times for doing such outrageous things as
WD> operating a generator within park-boundaries in Alaska, he refused to
WD> use an electric fence, he didn't carry bearspray, improper food
WD> storage. He was discovered with an ice chest full of food in his
WD> tent, he overstayed his 5 day permits for the same site often (a
WD> definite no-no in bear country).

All things that are not recommended, yet he survived 13 seasons living
with 'Grizzlys'...

WD> Then in October 2003 sometime he and his girlfriend set-up camp next
WD> to a salmon stream in Alaska not that far from Anchorage in a bear
WD> infested territory. It's that time of the year just before winter
WD> where they need to take whatever opportunity to fatten themselves
WD> prior to hitting their den. There was less salmon than other years
WD> and more bears, the berry-season also had been poor. Under those
WD> conditions bears get very aggressive, first towards eachother, then
WD> towards anything alive in the neighbourhood with a potential of
 WD> providing protein.

When the Park Service imposed a new rule - often referred to as the
"Treadwell Rule" (notice the two Ls) - requiring all campers to move their
camps at least one mile (1.6 km) every five days, Treadwell (right, two
Ls) initially tried to obey the order by using a small motor boat to move
his camp up and down the coast. Finding this method impractical, he later
hid his camp from the Park Service in stands of trees with heavy brush.

Eventually, he was cited at least once for this violation. Still, he lived
among the Grizzlies without harm for 13 seasons.

WD> And "in" walk mister Treadwel and miss Amie Huguenard and pitch camp
WD> right in the middle of a quarelling bunch of Grizzlies. They were
WD> told not to go near the place.

In the 85-year history of Katmai National Park, this was the first
incident of a person being killed by a bear.

WD> They didn't survive all that long and were indeed attacked, killed
WD> and eaten by bears. It was made memorable because during the attack
WD> miss Huguenard's handycam switched on for whatever reason and
WD> recorded the attack, sound only because the lens cap was on, for 6
WD> minutes when the tape ran out.

The camera had been turned on at some point before the attack, presumably
by Huguenard, but the camera recorded only six minutes of audio before
running out of tape. The audio tape is now the property of Jewel Palovak,
Treadwell's (note the two Ls) long-time friend and has not been released
to the public.

WD> Every time I heard the event commented upon by Park Rangers from
WD> Katmai Nat'l Park and Kenai Nat'l Park in Alaska as well as a
WD> seasoned bear-hunter from Seward AK it always boiled down to the
WD> same: mr. Treadwel and miss Huguenard were quite foolish to be at
WD> that spot at that time, what they did amounted to a kind of suicide.

That wasn't the first time Treadwell (note the two Ls) had camped at that
same site.

WD> FYI, between 1900 and 2007 there are 52 recorded deaths because of
WD> Black Bears and silver-blue Glacier bears (a black bear subspecies),
WD> 50 due to Grizzlies (including the Kodiak bear and the the Mexican
WD> brown bear) and 5 to Polar bears in the whole of North America.

See above...in the last 85 years, there have been no recorded deaths due
to bear attacks in that region...

WD> The number of people killed by dear and moose is a multitude of that.

LOL!

WD> I've had many bear encounters in the wild and although it may inspire
WD> a sense of discomfort when they come too close, never was harrassed
WD> by one except for a minor scratch.

Sure you were.

WD> And unlike other's knowledge which comes from googling, mine comes
WD> from reading the books that deal with this (started by "Night of the
WD> Grizzlies" about the 1967-deaths of Michelle Koons and Julie Helgeson
WD> in Glacier National Park) and from training by National Park staff.

There's nothing wrong with Googling, since that exposes one to more
information than you can get from a few out of print books on your shelf.

How to seperate the BS from reality is sometimes a problem, but it's no
different than wading through the BS you add to this echo.
