Ärende: N'other one evicted from dyndns?
========================================
Hello Russell,

On Tuesday October 26 2010 17:20, you wrote to me:

RT> DYNDNS.ORG - might or might not be having problems ... , see my
RT> previous post ... , but as per my previous post, so am I. :-(

I do not think it is dyndns.org that has a problem. Yes, you sure have some
problems and in addition to the ones you mentioned, you may have a problem with
dyndns.org. They announced that inactive accounts wuld be discontinued and
yours may be one of those.

RT> As a result I am unable to comment, with regard to the DYNDNS.ORG
 RT> problems.

Apparently you have internet access otherwise I would not see your writings, so
perhaps you should have a look at their website to check the status of your
account.

RT> My apologies, if I come across a little "annoyed" in the mentioned
RT> previous post ... , I am, and you are not at fault ...

No need yo apologise, I have lived in RSA, so I know the power companies are
not as reliable as in Western Europe. I understand your frustration and
sympathise with you.

I noticed there was a problem because there is mail waiting for you in my
outbound. Perhaps you can poll my system to pick it up.

RT> I am tired of being exposed to the internet with only an ancient 5-6

Plenty of Small office and Home routers are offered for a few Euro here in the
second life shops. Are you tied to that Telkom provided router?

RT> It does not do reliable dyndns updates,

You do not need the router to do it. When you have a PC running all the time -
which as a fidonet node, you would - you can have that PC take care of the
updates. There are plenty of freeware utilities around that can do it.

RT> port forwarding on it is a nightmare, and it lacks other functions I

If you can not replace that router, can you put it in bridge mode and put your
own router behind it?

That is a rear guard battle that you will lose. I know... I would not bother
with content filtering if I were you. He will find a way around it. One way or
another. Gentle parental guidance is better and keep in mind that one day he
will have to face the ugly world by himself. Try to prepare him for it instead
of trying to shield him from it...

RT> Also, last night I had an unexplained and unexpected, overnight, 1Gig.
RT> jump in my bandwidth usage, which puts me almost 800M over my
RT> bandwidth cap, as per Telkom Internets bandwidth monitoring tool ...

Ouch...

Reminds me of the time some 20 years ago now, when I got hold of a 2 x 6
private branch exchange. POTS of course. In a fit of misguided parental pride,
I installed phones not only in the kitchen and the master bedroom, but also in
the kids rooms.

Next month my telephone bill had gone up by a 100%.....

RT> I want that Linux box up and operating as soon as possible ... , at
RT> present, it looks like I will be running ClearOs on it ...

 RT> Thanks.

You'r welcome.

Cheers, Michiel
