As I understand it, they are glasses with an electronic hookup to blind out one
lens or the other (left or right) in synchronization with the images on the TV
to make you see a "left" and "right" picture, giving the effect of 3D. Of
course, this has the disadvantage that it halves the amount of light reaching
each eye, requiring increased brightness of the TV screen.

It's been so long ago, I can't remember how much of a problem that was. I think
I just put the glasses in front of my prescription lenses.

Red/green, but only for black and white films or comics.

As I understand it, the main problem is that the polaroid glasses require you
to hold your head upright, not to angle it or look to the side. The shutter
glasses don't have that disadvantage, but are quite expensive and technically
sophisticated.

Same here. I have a very nice LCD TV (digital) that I plan to use until it goes
bad. No analog here anymore, since they stopped broadcasting analog several
years ago in my area. Now you either use a satellite dish (60 cm is enough), or
a DVB-T antenna (cheap and convenient).
