Global warming is not a hype, it's "fact". The speed at which it happens and
the sources for it are matter for debate.
 
When people on certain Micronesian islands need to move their buildings farther
inland because waves are reaching further, then there is "a problem". Either
it's more water (i.e. global warming) or changing weathern patterns (i.e.
global warming).

In the 70-ies the German Forests (and the Norwegian, and the Swedish, and the
Finnish forests) were dying due to the accidification caused by traffic (leaded
gasoline without catalytic converter), households (coal heating), industry (the
burning of heavy oils and dirty coal) and ... tataaaaa ... ocean shipping where
anything will be burned that runs the vessel.
 
All that has been curbed and, indeed, look what's happened to the health of
European forests ... "The" major factor there was the demise of the GDR and the
USSR.
 
As you say indeed, "today" such a claim would get you laughed out of the
country, but "then" it was a dramatic reality.
