DD>>>>> Assange has not committed treason

RW>>>> No one has said that he did.

DD>>> You're obviously missing some of the news items out of USA. At
DD>>> least one US politician has been quoted on the TV as calling for
DD>>> Assange to be tried for treason.

RW>> You're obviously quoting from hearsay. Name the politician you claim
RW>> to have said that. I can't find anything that varifys what you're
 RW>> claiming.

DD> Yes, it was the talking head that said that "so and so, a US
DD> Congressman/whatever sort of politician said..." just as most news
 DD> reaches us.

The other day someone here made the claim that a politician, a former
Governor of a state and also a very popular former Presidential candidate,
called for the death penalty for Assange. This was also a claim made by
many websites, one who offers a link to a video recording of what he said.
If they had done their research better, they would have known that what he
said was quite different than what they claim.

What he said was that those who have released the files to Wikileaks and
Assange, should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the Espionage laws
of the US. Had they read the US Code on that, they would have known that
there is no death penatly for that crime.

DD> You seem to think Osama bin Ladin confesses tot he World Trade Centre
DD> affair - but you too rely on hearsay for that.

Like you, if I were able to use the Arabic language like a person who
translates what OBL has said about it, I'd know for sure just as you
would. Since very few of the people outside of the muslim world do speak
or at least read Aribic, I think everyone else has to depend on those
interpreters too. If one were to lie about what OBL said, the others
probably would tell on him.

DD>>>>> - the Australian Federal Police can find no Australian law that
 DD>>>>> he has broken.

RW>>>> And you know this because?

DD>>> They made a public statement to the press.

RW>> An about face from what they said earlier.

 DD> Indeed it was.

RW>>>> Yeah, I saw the Aussie PM state some bullshit
RW>>>> about how they're going to help Assange in every way they can.
RW>>>> That doesn't say much, considering he's under house-arrest in
 RW>>>> England.

DD>>> It means that they will provide diplomatic support.

RW>> That's helpful...not! As all Americans are told when they intend to
RW>> visit a foreign country, 'you're not protected by US law outside of
RW>> our borders, but we'll be of SOME help through the Embassie's
RW>> diplomatic department in arranging for your defense by a competent
RW>> local lawyer who is familiar with the laws of that country.'

DD> Yes, they tell Australians that (well Aussie law) too - but they
DD> still provide diplomatic support to their citizens in strife
 DD> overseas.

Not unpexpected.

 DD> [...]

DD>>> Assange is not a US citizen, nor has he been doing this "stuff" in
DD>>> US territory. He is therefore not subject to USA's oppressive laws.

RW>> I wouldn't bet on it if I were you. There have been others
RW>> extradited from foreign countries who have done less than Assange.

DD> Extradited for what? Even the US system hasn't found anything they
DD> can really stick on him.

So it seems.

DD>>> We have all heard of how USA "kidnaps" people so that it can shut
DD>>> them away - Look at the other two Aussies (Hicks and Habib) that
DD>>> hadn't stepped foot on US territory until they were moved there at
 DD>>> the US regime's pleasure...

RW>> Yeah, and they spent 7-8 years in custody in Cuba...of course, they
RW>> were declared 'enemy combatants' while aiding other EC's and
 RW>> imprisoned, per Geneva Convention.

DD> And then released (well, Hicks struck a deal and got shipped to
DD> Aussie where he was released)

I remember.

RW>> Look at the situation with the Russian arms dealer who was
RW>> 'extradited' to the USA, without the Russian violating any of
 RW>> Thailand's laws.

DD> Big difference with running guns (illegal in most countries) ans
 DD> "embarrassing politicians".

The point is that if they want Assange bad enough, they'll figure out a
way to get him. Which may be the reason Assange said he was afraid of
being extradited to the US when he was released from jail.
