I was sitting in a motel in Yakima, Wash on a Sunday morning in May of 1980
reading the newspaper. I was a trucker at the time, and the trailer was at an
apple plant to be loaded on Monday morning.


I was half listening to the news on tv while reading the paper, the door was
standing open, it was a nice warm morning.


The ground started quivering, then began shaking real good. Living in Southern
California I'd felt earth quakes before, and some pretty strong ones, too.


Suddenly there was a real heavy shock-like feeling in the ground, almost like
a very large amount of high explosive had gone off somewhere in the near-
distance, and the sound wave hadn't arrived yet, only the shaking of the
earth.


I got up and walked outside the door, and other people had come out as well to
see what had happened.


While we were standing there looking around and at each other, a huge black
clowd rose up in the distance to the southwest. It was enormous. There were
aftershock earthquakes for the rest of the morning, and part of the afternoon.


By the next morning when I went to pick up the trailer load of apples, there
was grayish-white volcanic ash all over the place, and you could smell it in
the air. A coating of ash covered the highways in that part of Washington
already, and it was being blown eastward. It reached as far east as Chicago,
Ill, where this load of apples was going. Had I known the value of volcanic
pumice for grinding and polishing, I'd have gotten several 55 gallon drums
full of it. It was there for the taking.
