Ärende: The so called intellectual property
===========================================
HI again,

As you've gathered over the years, I very much have a dog in this fight. In
the previous msg I wrote:

BF> The only ones losing are the greedy copyright MAFIAA
BF> with their outdated business...

RW> Them, and the small operators in nonmainstream media.
RW> Britney spears isn't losing anything from file sharing, nore is Jay
RW> Z nor other pop artists. But the folks who operate
RW> an independent production business and produce jazz or other not
RW> mainstream music lose. Even if they put it on the pay
RW> sites where you can put their song in your electronic
RW> shopping cart, a lot of folks who are music buffs find that
RW> mp3 isn't that great sounding, they might buy flak or a
RW> similar format. But then, they can't trust the accounting
RW> any more than that old black guy could trust Capitol
RW> records.

There's also the folks that do the steps in the process who
might serve some of the majors, but it's those small to
midpack production folks who are their bread and butter.
ARdent studios here in MEmphis for example. They might get
a major in for a lock in for a week two or three times a
year. IT's those others however, the folks hwo want to
spend their time in front of the microphone instead of
tweaking with a computer who hire them.

Ardent studios has two nice recording suites. I used them
recently for a demo, because i wanted to play a real
STeinway piano and not spend my time tweaking audio, just
walk in, play the material down, get my cd with the material on it for later
work, and walk out.

even if you produce it at home in your back room, if it's
really intended for the public and you've got savvy
management they're going to suggest, if not insist that you
get it mastered. Once you've spent that money to get your
project mastered, you're hoping to at least recoup your
costs. every one of those disks you don't sell at your gigs means less money
to do the next project, which means that
mastering engineer whose work you liked on the last one
can't depend on getting more work out of you.

tHen there's even an educational film, or a bottom of the
pack film that a guy's hoping to shoot a piece of to pitch
to the big players. EVer worked on a video or movie set?
THose folks with the technical chops to do the variety of
things that need doing aren't working for chump change
either. They've got bills to pay, families to feed, etc.

Fair and equitable solutions must be arrived at, but so
often the discussion gets into namecalling and
fingerpointing, and I'm not talking about just in fIdonet.
Meanwhile, the quality of audio and video media suffers as
there's a race to the bottom, get it for less, don't hire
the technical expertise you need because there's no money in it. IT doesn't
matter how much audio you might have learned at Full Sail, how much you might
have gleaned about
operating a camera and shooting a movie, a big part of
learning your craft was the apprenticeship which was built
in. YOu can't learn your craft working for cheap or with
another beginner. But, the only way folks like me are going to hire beginners
as second engineers or cameraman's
helpers, etc. is to have reliable paying work ourselves.
I hire folks with lots of live sound experiences as second
engineer on most of my projects, and pay a bit more per job, whereas a few
years ago I would have found myself able to
hire a second for less, and train him or her. But, as much
as I work it's not cost effective to do that.
YEah yeah, you can do a lot of this in your back bedroom.
You can work on your car in your driveway too, but there are times you're going
to need expertise you can't get from
surfing the web, etc. Translate this into the world of
intellectual property, and anything that hurts the small to
medium sized content creators, often those who self publish
and self produce who are in most need of protection, and
that has a very large ripple effect. These technical
service providers don't stay in business. Those wanna be
songwriters etc. pay for services to do what they do, if
they can find them close to home, at a reasonable price.

Regards,
           Richard
