Ärende: Erroneous English Assumptions
=====================================

RW>>>> How do you pronounce 'coloured'? I'd say the aberration is all

SA>>> Colured, definitely not colored, else wise it would not require

 RW>> Wrong, Stewart. Take a listen to the pronounciation at;

 RW>> http://www.thefreedictionary.com/dict.asp?Word=coloured

 SA> Try http://www.howjsay.com/index.php?word=coloured&submit=Submit

SA> There they say the word our way, the English way not your American
 SA> way.

LOL! If you submit 'colored' to your site, they say it the same way that
they say 'coloured'...not a good test as the speaker knows only one way to
pronounce the word.

SA> The speaker on he above site sounds English your site sounds American
SA> so the pronunciation is suspect in any case.

There is a slight distinction that one can hear in the two words. Click on
the American flag and you get the American way of saying it and then
clicking on the British flag, you get the same pronounciation with a
slight emphasis on the second syllable.

RW>> There's a slight difference, but none that jumps out at you.

SA> Yes the phonic dictionary has differences for colour and color but
SA> the characture limitations mean this medium cannot be used to type
SA> phonics, which is what started this whole thing i believe;)

And seeing the difference in spelling one automatically knows what the
word means. No big deal, other than one has to add a letter and one
doesn't. i.e. the u isn't worth the effort.

SA>>> No self respecting English speaker would say 'or' for 'our' in
 SA>>> that syllable,

RW>> And no proper English speaker would make it a point of contention.

SA>>> short spelling = careless pronunciation.

RW>> Proper spelling = proper pronunciation.

SA> Yes true and your spelling is not up to scratch.

I don't see anything different, other than the words you did't use.
Mine are spelled correctly.

SA>>> Note the original 'anglo-norman spelling was colur the latin is
SA>>> color and latin as a language, normally spoken, hasn't been
SA>>> a conversational language in England since the Romans were there,

RW>> Note that the proper pronunciation of the word is still as it was
RW>> during the anglo-norman period. No one pronounces the or as or, but
 RW>> as ur.

SA> Then why do you contradict yourself here, when above you say the UR
 SA> is incorrect?

I didn't say that. I said that the OUR is incorrect.

SA> looks to me like we are both arguing for the same pronunciation of
 SA> the damned word!

That is what I told you at the beginning of this discussion. But no, you
had to belittle the Ameican way of speaking and spelling and I did the
same in rebuttal.

SA>>> if it ever was! I as with a surname of Arnett, am unlikely to
SA>>> not be of Norman descent, have always been taught the original
SA>>> ponunciation "Colur". As is/was most common in my little corner
 SA>>> of the world

RW>> Then your claim that coloured is proper is a farce.

SA> The word is of Norman descent (read French) and as such the spelling
SA> follows the normal french way.

Like I've always told Nancy, when it comes to adopted foreign words in
the English language, we're not in France, we're in the USA, where we
speak English, not French.

Try this one on for size. Hint, it's not French.

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Iroquois

Note the difference (American v British) in the pronounciation of the last
syllable.

SA> There is no need to correct the word spelling for scientific
SA> continuum to make it read like colorimeter or colorific or even
SA> colorectal, where it is corectly pronounced color not colour....;)

Accept for the fact that colorectal isn't pronounced the same as the
former two words. The first two syllables are pronounced together as in
co-lo and the last two syllables are pronounced together as in rec-tal.

Co-lo-rec-tal not color-ectal.

SA>>> Similar with Neighbour ... not "neighbor", that was worth
SA>>> physical enhancement at school when I was there. ;(

RW>> Now your logic sounds like Jim Nabors...

SA> Never heard of him, not English is he? Did his parents get caned for
 SA> misspelling their family name?

His profession was comedian, who ironically, sang like Perry Como or Frank
Sinata. He could have made himself like them, yet he spoke like a red
neck.

SA> I completed reading the updates and saw your comment on 'leverage'
SA> howjsay actually makes the comment on the difference between English
SA> and American pronunciation in English we call the tool lever a leever
SA> while according to howjsay the americans say lever hence leverage as
SA> against leeverage, so for where you are it is correct to say
SA> leverage, damn French again ;)

I don't see how you can get leever out of leaver...Even Princess Lea
pronounces her name lay-ya...
