     Follup on "Installing a Domain Zone Page"

     I understand there was some confusion given the title and
     subject of one of my articles recently..  I'm sure you've
     been there.  Someone asks you a question, and you
     immediately start running with the topic, not thinking that
     what you are thinking and what your 'audience' is thinking
     may be different.

     Such was the case with my article on using a service like
     zoneedit.com to establish one's "zone pages" with an
     internet domain.  A "zone" that is related to one's domain,
     has nothing to do with a "Zone" as in Fidonet :) Just to
     make some things clear, I'll explain a bit more about what
     domain Zone is all about.


     On the internet, a domain name is a single entry, like
     "www.filegate.net" or just some "domain.com".  A "Zone" is
     a collection of one or more domain names, all having the
     same ending.  For example, "filegate.net" is an internet
     zone that contains "filegate.net", "www.filegate.net", and
     "mail.filegate.net".  It is with a service like
     zoneedit.com that you can create these parts of your Zone.
     A company like Zoneedit is a servive that stores the DNS
     records for a domain name, address (A) records, name server
     (NS) records, and mail exchanger (MX) records

     The Internet maintains two principal "namespaces", the domain
     name hierarchy and the Internet Protocol (IP) address
     system.  The Domain Name System maintains the
     domain-namespace and provides translation services between
     these two namespaces.  Zoneedit is a service that lets you
     enter your domain, and ip address and then assigns you a
     domain name server address, such as I have:

     whois filegate.net_
     [...]
     Registrant:
     IFDC FileGate Project
        121 Main Street
        Windsor, NY 13865 US

        Domain Name: FILEGATE.NET


        Domain servers in listed order:

           NS17.ZONEEDIT.COM
           NS13.ZONEEDIT.COM
     [...]

     Then when someone decides to visit to my web page, or to
     send me an email, the location of my system is known by the
     records I have entered at zoneedit.

     Now sometimes the company you purchase your domain from may
     take care of all of this for you..  Network Solutions, the
     company where I purchased filegate.net from so many years
     ago, does not.  They simply sell you the domain-name space.
     I had to set up the zone pages myself via zonedit for
     filegate.net to link my IP address, domain-name-space, my
     domain server and MX records.

     I hope this makes things a bit clearer, and sorry for any
     misunderstandings I may have caused! :)
