     Fidonet on FaceBook
     By Janis Kracht, 1:261/38, janis@filegate.net

I finally found something on Facebook that makes Facebook
     worthwhile...

In the open group named Fidonet you'll see some incredibly
neat people that you may not have heard from in a very long
time, and of course some of your favorite people who you
     talk to in Fidonet everyday.

The 'youngsters' among us may not know some of these
Fidonet 'pioneers' but these guys were certainly impressive
     to me way back :)

For example, I saw Wynn Wagner (Opus) posting there, and I
said to Ron, OMG.. Wynn Wagner! Ron said, "who?".. hehe
well, I have to tell you that Ron has always stayed away
from all things Fidonet so that wasn't so surprising :) I'm
sure that's because Ron's job as a software
designer/engineer makes him not really crazy about
telecommunications - he has to deal with too many "people"
     every day as it is.

But for me, it was super seeing people like Vince Perriello
     (Binkley-Term), and Joaquim Homrighausen (Frontdoor)
posting. All I could think was, 'wow'. I even saw some
people from the now-defunct Zone 6 posting there.

Now.. how to get them to re-join Fidonet? <vbg>

Google Plus: Social Networking Not Primary Purpose
     by Gary Perkins

Many here on Fidonet and in the BBS world have moved, like most on
Earth, to using social networking sites to keep in touch with friends,
family, and current events. When Google canned its Google Wave and
announced Google+, the Internet went abuzz with chatter about how nice
it would be to have a fresh social network, hopefully without all the
junk that invariably invades the other sites.

Right from the start, Google had to limit the number of subscribers
while they worked out the kinks. They started with a handful of
invites, then allowed those users to invite others. Subscriptions
predictably skyrocketed, and in general the comments on the quality of
     the service have been positive.

However, there have been some complaints. For one thing, it's quite
annoying to some users with "odd" or highly public names. These users
will often find their accounts suspended and access to their other
services such as mail and documents blocked. They then have to
"prove" their identity to Google. Funnily enough, this is
accomplished even with obviously fake information, which in my opinion
begs the question of why even bother with proof of identity.

Over the last couple months users have complained about the real name
and real information policy which Google has instigated on their
Google+. Several articles have been written in various publications
regarding how the Internet functions best when anonymity is allowed,
and just how difficult it is to prove someone is whom they say they
are. Regardless (or perhaps because of this?), Google's Eric Schmidt
recently announced that Google+ is all about identity, rather than
     social networking.

This just gives me more reason to stay away from Google+. While I was
once a big fan of Google, and in some ways still am, I refuse to allow
them to manage ALL of my life. To date, Google can now host your:
mail, usenet news subscriptions, documents and other files, website,
text AND voice data, and much, much more.

No, I'm not a privacy nut. But, I can understand some users'
reluctance to allow such a big corporation access to their data, for a
number of reasons. For myself, I simply choose to not use Google
anymore. My main reason is I don't quite like the idea of putting all
my eggs in such a large basket. They might get lost. Or broken.
Personally, I choose to host my own services and keep them close at
hand. If something happens, it's MY responsibility. As for social
networking, I have all the networking I need on my BBS, my message
     networks, and Internet email.
