You are putting words into my mouth. The article was about IPv6 launch day on
the 6th of June. In passing I also mentioned that on that same date there would
be on of these rare Venus transits.

The link to the end of the world is yours, not mine as your wording suggests.

These transits do indeed occur in pairs that are 8 years apart. But I find it
extremely unlikely that the Mayans knew that. One can not observe it with the
naked eye and since the invention of the telescope, only six transits have been
observed. There are no indications the Mayas were ware of the phenomena.

The last one was on the 8th of June 2004. I watched that in all its glory with
my own telescope from my own garden. That will probably be the only one I will
ever see, because the next transit in june 2012, the second of a pair, will
take place when the sun is below the horizon here, except for the last hour. I
do not have a clear view on the eastern horizon, so I will have to travel to
see it. I don't know if that is worth it. In this country there is a 50+%
chance there will be a cloud cover anyway. And the one after that in 2117, I
surely will miss.
