I'm very familiar with the concept.  Remember i work in
production.  IF my customers have on expectation of selling
their work in perpetuity and find themselves giving it away
they're less likely to hire services such as I offer, after
all, why pay to do a high quality job when you can just
throw anythign out there for free.

You and I both agree though that the big corporations have
screwed up in a major way by not understanding that:

#1, the customer thinks the price is too high; and

2:  hE can't often get waht he wants in a usable form
conveniently.

Solve those two issues and the creators might actually get
paid for their work.    Both the book publishers and the
music publishers aren't doing themselves any favors in the
long run here.  The bitch is, in the music publishers' case, they're taking
down a lot of people in the process.

Believe me, I follow the discussion from a multitude of
viewpoints here.  In my business I'd be rather stupid not
to.

But, doesn't the publisher who pays you for an article in a
periodical expect that he'll be able to actually sell that
publication to subscribers?  Somebody pays him to be able to pay you.  IF they
don't, he's soon not commissioning future
works by you, and maybe a printing and packaging facility
goes down too if he's a major customer.

IN audio we're left with the two ends, the hign end, skilled technicians, lots
of good gear, well tuned spaces for
control room and performers to work in .

Then there's the low end:  Guys dabbling in basements and
back rooms that don't have the ears, the skills or often if
they have the tools don't know how to use them properly.
The middle has been squeezed out.
