Hello Roy,

On Wednesday July 04 2012 07:40, you wrote to me:

My point was that only leaf nodes can be private.

RW> Anyone who thinks like that shouldn't have a *C position.

You are entitled to your opinion. As you are not a member of my baylifwick, I
shall ignore it.

RW> Anyone interested in Fidonet should be treated as an interested party

Of course. Anyone interested in Fidoet and wanting to participate without the
burden of ZMH complience is welcom to participate as a point. Points have been
- and still are up to a point - valuable participants 0f the Fdionet community.
They provide for flow in echomail, many of them have been able programmers.
Without points FidoNet would not have been as popular as it was in Z2.

MvdV>> The ability to receive incoming calls is essential for the
 MvdV>> operation of the network.

 RW> Not really.

Yes it is. Without at least one system capable of accepting incoming calls, the
network can not function. Who are you going to call to pick up and drop mail,
if no one accepts incoming calls?

RW> A pvt node who wishes to remain pvt shouldn't be forced to
RW> do anything they don't want to do.

There are no private nodes in my net and an application for a private node will
not be honoured. The applicant will be offered a point number.

The ability to accept incoming calls is essential for the operation of the
network. While the network can operate with a limited - even a fairly large -
number of system that can make outgoing calls only, it is unfair to place the
burden on others and give nothing in return.

It is like the member of the HAM club that wants to make use of the club's
equipment such as the spectrum analyser, but who refuses to contribute to the
cost of maintaining said equipment.

While the club could technically still function if a limited number of members
did not contribute, it would be socially unacceptable.

RW> If you want to trade in file distribution and ignore echomail, a pvt
RW> listing is the way to go.

A point number will do fine for that.

MvdV>> If no one accepted incoming calls, the network could not
 MvdV>> function.

RW> Routed mail is alive and well in Z1...

It could not function if no one accepted incoming calls.

RW> ZMH is dead and buried for all of it's ancientness.

So if no one accepts incoming calls, where will you drop your outgoing routed
mail and pick up your incoming routed mail?

Having said that: I try to avoid routed mail, especially mail routed through Z1
as I know there are people playing games with in transit mail.

MvdV>> call. I call that leeching. They should be points.

RW> They should be left to their own devices...

Like the HAM club member who refuse to contribute but wants the use of the
spectrum analyser anyway?

Not in my club.

Cheers, Michiel
