Ärende: Using An Alias 3
========================
Replying to a message of Lee Lofaso to David:

 LL> Hello David,

 >>> LL>The question is not what fido is, but rather what
 >>> rights/privileges LL>participants should have in order to
 >>> protect themselves from harm. LL>My position is very
 >>> simple. All participants, including sysops and
 >>> LL>moderators, should have the right/privilege to conceal
 >>> their real LL>names when posting messages. As it is right
 >>> now, only sysops and LL>moderators have that
 >>> right/privilege. And Bjorn Felten wants to LL>deny that
 >>> right/privilege to sysops/moderators/participants in this
 >>> LL>forum. Without ever giving sound reason as to why.

 LL> [..]

DA>> I wasn't trying to cause anyone any harm. I actually forgot
DA>> to set up my user account with my real name. I actually
DA>> use my alias for everything. I have since changed it so
DA>> everyone can see. I agree with you though. On the WWW
DA>> scene I use my alais and most places do not require my
DA>> real name. They track the IP for any damage done. We can
DA>> do the same and the fido address. N trying to cause any
DA>> problems. Did not forsee it becoming this. Yes I am a
DA>> sysop, I like my alais but if the rules are real names in
DA>> fido that is what will do, but then again how do we know
DA>> Bob Smith is a real name and not Wald Emerson posting as
DA>> Bob Smith? Back in the BBS days of the late 80's and earl
DA>> 90's I knew users that would provide a name and it was not
DA>> even their real name. Heck the only thing real at that
DA>> time was their handle. I can look up everyone of them by
DA>> their handle and find them. If I tried by the names
DA>> provided I wouldn't find one. So Lee you have a valid
 DA>> point.

 DA>> David Truesdale (Freejack)

LL> In my book, more is better. Especially with no added cost.
LL> Allowing all participants the right/privilege to use an
LL> alias would mean an additional option for participants,
LL> with no added cost. Participants could choose to continue
LL> using their real names, as that would remain a valid
LL> option. But why deny anybody the option to use an alias?
LL> I can think of no valid reason as to why any participant
LL> should be refused that option.

LL> Individuals would continue to access fidonet by registering
LL> with a bbs using their real names, and could use an alias
LL> when posting messages. The sysop would know who the
LL> participant is based on the sysop's own logs/records. As
LL> such, there is no deceipt. An individual who registers
LL> with a bbs under a fictitious name would be a totally
LL> different story. But that is not the issue, nor am I
LL> suggesting individuals log on to a bbs with anything other
 LL> than their real names.

LL> What we have in fido today is an assumption that all
LL> participants are using their real names. But nobody really
LL> knows (aside from those who are doing the posting) who
LL> those real people are. It is obvious that a real person is
LL> typing a message and sending that message to a bbs, the
LL> message then posted for all to see. But what we are really
LL> reading is not a person's name, but rather a blip on a
LL> computer monitor. So why not do away with the facade and
LL> get rid of that silly real names only rule? At least that
LL> way we would be living in a realm of reality.

We went over just this subject several (many!) years ago in POLITICS.
A couple of people there used 'handles' at the time but it wasn't any
secret who they were. One fellow got all up in arms about the use of
those 'handles,' and I pointed out that unless one was personally acquainted
with the individual one was conversing with via computer one did not know
if the 'real name' being used was in fact that individual's name.

A couple of decades ago a poster had been banned from an echo (POLITICS)
and returned using an alias. When called on it he claimed that alias was in
fact his real name and that he was not the person that had been banned; the
moderator of the echo (Ed Cleary - I said it was a long time ago) told him
to make a copy of his drivers' license and mail the copy to him. The fellow
went away.
