I find it somewhat amusing that people who rely on all sorts of modern
conveniences look down on people who don't.  Note that power failures,
gasoline shortages, and things like that have only a minimal effect on the
Amish - while the rest of the population can be devastated.

I also note that Amish tend to help themselves rather than seek outside
(read: government) assistance, and they are far more self sufficient than
the rest of the population.  They still do 'barn raisings' occasionally.

After the Orscheln Farm & Home store in Omaha moved to its new digs, the
company sold the old metal building to an Amish group.  They had a group of
about six men that came in and took that building down in about a week -
without using any power tools, forklifts or hoists (they did use pickup trucks
and trailers to haul the pieces away - it was reassembled elsewhere).  I've no
idea how they got those big, heavy air conditioning units off the roof, but
they
did.
