I don't think they still do that. This was early in the game, as I stated
above.

They can check credit cards if they know all of the numbers, including a
coded number on the back of the card. Before PayPal, that was what I had
to provide. If any one number was wrong, somehow they knew it and would
reject the input and ask for the correct info.

This was done automatically when the account oversear found the charge.
The small amount will always be flagged for further review.

I wasn't happy at the time, but when I found out why, I cooled off.

I've transferred money from both of the above mentioned accounts into the
checking account, online. I don't ever have a reason to move money from
checking. Any large check or cash deposits I do in person at the bank.
