Ärende: Lakotan Myths
=====================

RW>> WD> BTW, at the Battle of the Little Bighorn Sitting Bull was
 RW>> already
RW>> WD> too old to be a warrior...

RW>> Born in 1831, he was only 45 years old when the Little Bighorn
RW>> battle was fought in 1876.

RW>> That wasn't too old to fight for Lakotans, ...

WD> That was way too old to fight as a warrior. Stanley Vestal, Dee
 WD> Brown, James Welch, ...

Vestal wasn't born until 1877, lost his father before he was 5 and he
himself never served in the Indian wars. He was an artillery Captain
during WW1, but never saw any action concerning the Indian Wars. I'd
discount any writings of his because of his non-experience, even if he
was a college professor. I can understand your fervor over this man
because he was a liberal.

Anyone with a womans first name can't be an indian fighter. Since he was
also born too late (1908) to experience the Indian Wars, his Wounded Knee
publication was a work of fiction. Good try though.

Welch was a late comer, a Montanan and part Blackfoot indian, so your
mentioning of his name is understandable.

WD> who all wrote extensively about the Indian wars and that specific
WD> battle plus the demise of the Plains Indian culture all agree.

None of them wrote from experience, but from hearsay. Just like the people
who wrote the New Testament, 100 years after the fact.

WD> Even today you won't find that many 45 yr old pfcs.

That's because there is no need for them. During WW2, my ex-FIL was
drafted into the Army at the age of 45 with a rank of pfc. During that
same time, the Nazi Army drafted older men than that to fight on the
Russian front. Too old, my ass.

RW>> ... but since he was chosen as the
RW>> chief of all Lakotans, his place wasn't to engage in the fight, but
RW>> let Crazy Horse and other war chiefs do the dirty work.

WD> He was not "chosen" ... the Sioux did not elect leaders. There merely
WD> were people who had followers because these individuals were "leaders
 WD> by example".

Since his father was a chief, he was also. But you have a tinge of reality
in your diatribe; he was chosen to be their supreme leader because of his
ability to lead and actually make and carry out successful battle plans.

WD> Tribesmen were free to follow whomever they wanted and they often
 WD> switched bands.

That flys in the face of the fact that Sitting Bull became the leader of
all Sioux tribes for the purpose of driving Custer from the Dakota
territory.

RW>> What's really funny is how he died, in 1890, after performing a
RW>> ritual, but banned, 'Ghost Dance' on the Standing Rock reservation.

WD> Sitting Bull was not a Ghost Dancer.

You should buy a new book. Sitting Bull performed the Ghost Dance the
evening before his death. Had he not performed that dance, then he
wouldn't have had the reservation police at his door.

 RW>> Before dawn on
RW>> December 15, 1890, the reservation policemen (also Lakotans) burst
RW>> into Sitting Bull's cabin and dragged him outside. When the chief
RW>> resisted, one of the Lakota policemen put a bullet through his head.
RW>> Crow Foot, his son, was also slain in the same manner during that
 RW>> event.

WD> When you describe that event you need to be way more specific ...
WD> your version is too minimalistic.

None the less, my version is fact taken from the writing of historical
events.

WD> It is just the same as saying that on 9-11 someone got up in a plane
WD> en-route from Boston to the westcoast and then it crashed into the
 WD> WTC North Tower.

Yes, no doubt this is your version...
