Hi Ward,

Saturday September 21 2013 20:01, you wrote to me:

you both maybe correct ... Bjoern with connection attempts that still worked
without any failures, and your connection attempt that didn't worked about 3-5
minutes later after your last connect to Michiel's system around the time in
question ...

What I've tried to say is, if two systems tries to connect a 3rd system, one
may have success while the other gets a connection attempt failure ...
one connection failure doesn't exclude another link connection to be successful
... as said in my previous mail ... there are to many points to list that can
make a connection failure, where another connection succeeds

There are other situations possible, one works on a system maintenance that
prevents connections ... but this doesn't mean, that one who has a recuring
connections to this system also records this service maintenance outage ... as
the last connection attempt was before maintenance started and the next attempt
started after system maintenance finishes ....

WD> Have I said anything else? Have I accused anyone? Anything?

the delivered reports by others are only addtl. informations, that gives some
evidence that there was no general destination system problem, but a specific
connection link problem. As Bjoern mentioned, it may relate to a dns resolver
problem, but other problems are also possible ...
If you want to identify the real problem that caused the connection problem,
you have received a couple of reports around the time in question that showed
successful connection attempts. Especialy Michiel's log shows a couple of
different connects around that time ...
Not more, not less ...
No one accused anyone ... some delivered reports for better analyzing what may
have caused troubles connecting ...

On my business internet connection it now works for around 23 years.
Only two times in one year we've recorded two outages ... one caused by a
global power outage in the local area (our systems was all still online and in
the building we're running all the servers we had no network loss identified as
the complete LAN in the building was online over the full time of power outage,
as the complete building is running behind a buildings UPS. So 12 years + 10
years without any internet connection loss ... so why shouldn't it possible
that one cannot have connection attempts without failures at the very first
time ...
FTN links are by default individual connection attempts, so by default no
connection by length of time ... One individual link may connect every 10 min's
and another link may connect only if mail has to be delivered. On a low traffic
link this may trigger probably one connect each day ? But nowadays we see more
and more push links - in earlier fido times mostly mail was set on hold for
downlinks - today we discover many push links, whenever mail has been tossed,
its mailed out immideatly so a more frequent mail delivery occurs.

The discussion started by Bart, reporting that he has problems connecting to
Michiels system. Maybe it was a temporarely outage of this specific link ...
Later you've also reported a connection failure, but others reported successful
links at the same time and around that time.

It becomes a fruitless discussion, if one wants to make expectations, that the
link that works for one system, has to work for another system too.
But what we can all get out of the discussion is the information that the
connection at 20th Sept 21:59 to Michiel's system did work for some and for
others it didn't .... not more, not less :)

 WD> \%/@rd

regards, uli ;-)
