Hello mark,

On Monday September 23 2013 12:19, you wrote to me:

ml>> to the entry and how often entry updates have to be made to keep

MvdV>> Never. It is kept alive as long as I keep paying the yearly
 MvdV>> fee...

ml> ahhh... so there is no updater program that you have to use to tell
ml> the static domain name provider what the current IP for said domain
 ml> is?

No, I don't need that. They supply you with an updater and the folks who's ISP
regularly forces a change of IP need it. I have run the updater in the past but
I have stopped using it as it never did anything because my IP is quasi static.

ml> what do you do if your IP changes? is it handled automatically or
 ml> manually?

My IP only changes when I change the router. Or more precise, when its MAC
address changes. That won't happen without e knaowing about it, so such a
change is never unexptected. The present router has been in place for a couple
of years.

When I change the router - without cloning the old router's MAC address - I
will get a new IP address. I even get back the old address when I put the old
one back in place. I assume there is a time limit there, coupled to the lease
time, but I never run into that.

Anyway. I can do two things:

1) I can go to their website and manually update the zone file.
2) I can click on the icon for the updater and let it run for a few minutes.

MvdV>> I haven't set up an automated defence like that. I did not feel
MvdV>> the need. I may change my mind...

ml> FWIW: mine is for the protection of all my servers... it is definitely
ml> not limited to fidonet operations... i have several web servers, mail
ml> servers and ftp servers all in operation here... hackers, spammers and
ml> script kiddies attempt to beat on them all the time...

I just run a binkp server and a very simple web server. No mail servers, no ftp
servers. I guess I am not an attractive target.

ml> even attempting to use the web servers as proxies to mail servers to
 ml> shovel their spam out...

I heve never seen any attempts like that in the web servers log...

MvdV>> A call once a minute is annoying because it pollutes the log.
MvdV>> Otherwise it is pretty harmless.

ml> yup on both accounts... in addition to polluting the logs, it can
ml> cause them to become so large that they may be extremely hard to
 ml> analyze or peruse...

Yes, large logs can be a nuisance. Information overlaod....

ml> i remember one of my downlinks was polling here every five minutes...
ml> they were not delivering any mail and there was none waiting for them
ml> since my processing is done on a specific time schedule which they
ml> were told about when they asked for their connection... my binkd log
ml> went from a few tens of megs a month to over one hundred megs a
ml> month... the term "painful" doesn't begin to express the feeling of
ml> processing that log to break it down for analysis...

I can see that. But I don't keep the logs that long. I have them trimmed at
regular intervals. In order not to make any bad guys reading this any wiser, I
won't divilge how long I keep te logs, but it is not forever.

MvdV>> That is what I gathered from previous postings of yours.

ml> the software i use is free, too... the only cost is the electricity
ml> and that's minimal compared to what they are already spending on
ml> anything else... even their current electrical usage would hardly see
ml> the addition of one more machine...

Over here that is different. Energy is about four to five times more expensive
here as in the US.

ml> in the specific situation i'm talking about, the operator (apparently)
ml> refuses to tell his customers that they are causing some of their own
ml> problems and to back off their connections... they won't implement any
ml> kind of time limited blocking to alleviate the problem and instead
ml> they carry on about how they are losing customers due to the
 ml> problems...

I see.

Cheers, Michiel
