Hello Alexander,

ak>> Truman could say "We've made a diabolical bomb, and we are going
ak>> to burn alive 200 thousand people from two big Japanese cities.
 ak>> Isn't it great news?"

RW>> Of course, Truman had no idea of the destruction the bomb could do
 RW>> at this time.

AK>But he did have this idea at the moment of ordering to bomb,
AK>because he was aware of the result of the nuclear test.

Sorry, but I have to side with Roy on this one. President Truman
had absolutely no idea how destructive atomic bombs could be to
people, as no atomic bomb had ever been dropped on real live people
anywhere in the world before. The atomic bomb that was tested in
the desert was done in the presence of human observers, but those
human observers were a good distance away from point zero, as well
as having some protection from the blast.

ak>> But we know Truman's reaction only -- he liked the results of the
ak>> first bomb so much that he decided to drop the second one.

Truman liked what he was told about the results of the atomic bomb
test. Based on what he was told about that test, he made the decision
to drop an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. In order to speed up the process
to force an unconditional surrender of Japan, Truman then ordered the
destruction of Nagasaki by atomic hellfire. Not sure what Truman would
have done had the Japanese Emperor chosen the honorable path of suicide
by sword.

RW>> Truman didn't know the true power of the 1st bomb (July 1945) until
RW>> they dropped the 2nd bomb on August 6, 1945 over Hiroshima. The 1st
RW>> bomb was exploded at White Sands, New Mexico the month before.

AK>So, how do you say that Truman didn't know the A-bomb destructive
AK>power after the testing had been done? It was exactly the testing
AK>had shown the destructiveness of the A-bomb.

The testing of the atomic bomb was not done on real live human beings.

AK>The first bombing on Hiroshima was another confirmation,

The atomic bombing of Hiroshima was the first testing on real live
human beings.

AK>before dropping the second bomb.

The atomic bombing of Nagasaki was the second testing on real live
human beings (or confirmation of the first testing that dropping atomic
bombs on populated cities really do kill live human beings).

AK>So, your argument is poor.

Roy's premise: Based on the testing of the atomic bomb, President
Truman had no idea as to how many people would be killed if such a
bomb was to be dropped on a populated area.

We know today (about) how many people lost their lives in Hiroshima
and in Nagasaki. Many were killed directy by the atomic bombings.
Others died more slowly, in pain and agony, over a period of days,
weeks, months, years, or decades.

And that's just the people. Many buildings and other structures
also came down, or were incinerated ...

RW>> "Years later, Marshal Georgi K. Zhukov, in his memoirs, disclosed
RW>> that that night (Potsdam) Stalin ordered a telegram sent to those
RW>> working on the atomic bomb in Russia to hurry with the job."
 RW>> Charles E. Bohlen, Witness to History 1929-1969 (New York: W. W.
 RW>> Norton, 1973) pp. 247-248.

AK>Actually, the matter is that theoretically an A-bomb was invented
AK>a good time before the WW2, and everybody knew of it. It was not a
AK>matter of complexity to do it, it was the matter of technology.

Many scientists around the world were aware of that discovery.
The US, Germany, and Japan were all working towards development of
an atomic bomb, even before hostilities broke out. However, the
Nazis had help. From beings outside this universe. These beings
looked kind of like us, except with blue skin. Werner Van Braun
leaked that info out to a journalist who was investigating a rumor
that Adolf Hitler and other high-ranking Nazis escaped Berlin in
an invention known as "the bell." This new contraption could
supposedly travel through time and space, thus enabling the Nazis
to win the war ...

ak> In 1938 it was discovered that an atom of uranium divides when stricken
ak> by a neutron. In 1939 Curie told all the world (like an idiot) that
ak> every fusion produces many neutrons. Since then, every dog (from the
ak> world of science :)) knew that these two facts could be used for making
 ak> a very powerful bomb.

ak> Of course, Russian scientists knew about it, too. I repeat, it was a
ak> matter of time and technology to make an A-bomb first. It so happened
ak> that almost all atomic scientists had gathered in the US before WW2 and
ak> they were whipped up by news that Hitler tried to make the bomb too.

ak> Hitler tried to make and use an A-bomb because he was Hitler. The US did
ak> use it against civilians, and more of that, it many times made plans to
ak> bomb the USSR first. Besides, I still don't know a single the USSR's
ak> plan to attack the US first with A-boms.

Hitler stopped his pursuit to develop the atomic bomb in favor of
developing an even more destructive weapon known as "the bell."
This weapon could be used to travel in space and time, thus enabling
the Nazis to win the war even when appearing to be totally defeated.
Remnants of this weapon can be found in Poland, but I suspect these
remnants are merely a support structure for the device/weapon itself.

As for the former USSR wanting to attack the US first with atomic
bombs, that is pure nonsense, as the former USSR never had such a
capability. The US did have a first-strike capability, but wisely
chose not to intitiate a global nuclear war. Our (American and
Russian) leaders may be mad, but they are not crazy. :)
