Why should that matter?  If a child is born in Belgium, shouldn't
that child automatically be Belgian by birth?  IOW, a naturally-born
citizen of Belgium.

Why should that matter?  Regardless of the mother's nationality,
if a baby is born on Belgian soil, then would it not make snese for
the baby to be Belgian?  After all, why should the mother get to
decide what citizenship a child born in Belgium gets to be?  And
for foreigners to decide the fate of babies born in Belgium should
make all Belgians truly aghast.

Why should that matter?  If a baby is born in Belgium, the baby
should automatically be a Begian citizen, regardless of where the
mother is from or what the mother says or does not say.

Again, why should that matter?  The baby should have a say in the
matter, especially since the baby is born in Belgium.  Why is the baby
denied the same basic right that all other babies in Belgium have?

Think about the folly of your position -

If the mother denies she is Belgian, baby is deported.  If the father
denies he is Belgian, baby is deported.  But only if the mother denies
she is Belgian.  While it is difficult for a mother to deny she is the
mother of the baby, it is very easy for the father to deny his guilt -
"I'm not the daddy!"  Besides, only the mother can know for sure who
the real daddy of the baby is.  And even then, she might not know.

The baby is Belgian unless the mother decides otherwise???  What
kind of fucked-up society is Belgium?  Certainly the mother of the
baby must know where she is when she gives birth.  Not only that,
but who ever heard of a mother telling the nurses, "Take that baby
away!  I don't want it!  Give me a pretty one instead!"

Why should that matter?  If a baby is born in Belgium it should be
the baby's choice as to whether he/she wants to remain a citizen of
Belgium.  Nobody should be allowed to make that choice for him/her.

Belgian citizens can deny their own citizenship?  Where would they
go if they do that?  Just because a Belgian citizen chooses to give
up his/her own citizenship does not mean another country will accept
them as a citizen of that country.

Some foolhardy Americans learned that the hard way.  Including one
idiot who got himself a "world passport" and proclaimed to the world
on the steps of the United Nations that he was a "citizen of the
world."   Before he knew it, he found himself being a stateless
person, kind of like a Palestinian refugee.

Better, my friend.  Much better.  So much better as to be the envy
of the world.  However, those maternity wards in the USA are not nearly
as accessible as those in Europe, Australia, Asia, ...
